When I landed at Algiers , in April , 1836 , the whole European population numbered fourteen thousand soulsof whom seven
thousand inhabited Algiers and the neighborhood , , and the remainder Bona and Oran . Colonists had settled not only within the walls
of Bona and Oran , but for some few miles around Algiers . The country retained its native character and abounded with game of
