Popular Education! 'The Popular Educator...
POPULAR EDUCATION ! ' The Popular Educator . Vol . I . Kent and Co . The working man who studies carefully half the lessons contained in this solid but cheerful and -varied volume , will possess himself of a remarkable amount of knowledge . It is as well adapted for the use of children as for the use of adults . The subjects are well ehbsen and pleasantly developed—so well and so pleasantly , indeed , that the work is esteemed by some of the best friends of the industrious classes as a complete manual of popular information on history , on the Arts , ' on the English language , and on the elements of science—including geography , geology , and botany . Dr . Fergusson , Dr . Jenkyns , Mr- Curwen , and other gentlemen , have contributed . Some of the illustrations are evidently French , and have to all appearance served their time in Parisian miscellanies . What is lost in originality , however , is gained in execution . Nothing more vicious or paltry can be conceived than the style of wood-cut sketching for English cheap literature .

"The Evil Genius." Do You "Know What It ...
" THE EVIL GENIUS . " Do you "know what it is to have about you a provokingly good-humoured , joyous , unsophisticated , blunt-spoken , right-hearted but wrong-witted iellovv , who will insist in thrusting himself before you , marring your plans , " taking down " your pride , neutralising your most serious projects with some antithesis of fun , and decomposing your cherished conventionalities with the subtle chemistry of laughter which has wisdom in it ?¦ Of such is the " Evil Genius '" of Mr . Bayl . e Bernard ' s comedy produced last Saturday night ¦ at the Ha-YMArket under that title . This EvilGenius * ' is Tom Ripstone , « . jovial agriculturist of the Midland Counties , personated by the ever-joyous Mr . Buckstone , who suddenly appears at the country villa in Derbyshire -of his old friend Mr . Hill Cooley QlLx . Chippendale ) , a man of humble origin who has made his fortune in India , and who , returning purse-proud And subservient , desires to forget his former acquaintances , and to marry his ward , Clara Fielding , to an exhausted young rake of fashion , Mr . Walmsley ( Mr . W . Fakren ) . He wishes moreover to sink all knowledge of a former plebeian marriage of his , and of a son whotn lie has deserted j but Ripstone , the benevolent Evil Genius , has brought up this son , who is in fact in the habit of visiting Mr . Cooley ' s house in his capacity of doctor , and who , by teaching Clara botany , has made a conquest of her affections . ; Partly out of love of fun . and mischief , but much more from his native goodness of heart , Tom Ripstone defeats all the plans of Mr . Cooley , to that gentleman ' s intense rage and vexation at first ; saves , moreaver , the old East Indian himself from a match with a designing widow of high-flown lineage and empty purse—one Mrs . Montgomery ( whose dragonish nature he quells by discovering a box directed to her , containing a wig ); and finally restores " " long-lost son" to the arms of his penitent father . In' these schemes lie is aided by Lady Aurora Ringwood—a . rollicking , sparkling , out-spoken gentlewoman of high birth , who has small regard for lineage . Mr . Buckstone ' s performance of the benevolent , but exasperating , Tom was steeped in that radiance of geniality and rough animal spirits for which his acting is always remarkable . He darts through the interstices of the story like a great ray of sunshine in a July noon— hot , bright , benignant , and alive with constant movement . By his sides , laughs and talks and rattles and sparkles the gay Lady Aurora , the performance of which part by Miss
Reynolds was like a reminiscence of Mrs . Nesbitt . Mr . Chippendale was rough and sordid as the East India man . of fortune ; and Miss Swanbobough played his ward with as much effect as the part would permit . But decidedly the best performance was that of Mr . Compton as Joe Withers , an old postman and friend of Ripstone—a dull-witted , tottering imbecile , whose recollection is entirely gone for recent events , but who is perpetually groping about in a ghostly sort of way in the deserted chambers of his memory , and calling up the dead men and things of forty years ago in purposeless resurrection . The dreamy bewilderment and mental fumbling , combined with perfect self-satisfaction in all he says or does , of this infirm remnant of a man , was indicated by Mr . Compton with subtle power . The comedy is deficient in incident , but is written with considerable spirit aad tartness ; and the audience did not seem to miss the absence of rapid movement . Of the scenery it would be difficult to speak too highly . The scene of the second act , representing a private garden , painted by Mr . Morris , and that of the third act , by Mr . Calcott—a view in an open park —we have never beheld surpassed for truthfulness and aerial effect .

Picco. Picco, The Blind-Born Sardinian S...
PICCO . Picco , the blind-born Sardinian shepherd , gave Ms first concert at the Hanover-square Rooms oa Saturday last . The instrument on which he plays " ravishing divisions , " is nothing more nor less than what is vulgarlyknown as a penny whistle . With this tibia , Picco was wont , we may suppose , to call his sheep together on his native hills , and take echo with delight as he wore away the lonely hours , doubly lonely to his sightless eyes . Nature is beneficent in her compensations . This poor blind shepherd must have found unspeakable consolation and companionship in his simple reed : he has now found fame and fortune . The critic of the Times says very justly that the music cannot be called sweet : there is an inevitable shrilLness in the tone , but into this penny whistle , which his hand covers as he plays , Picco conveys a feeling , a variety , and intensity of expression impossible to conceive . On this occasion , he made it sing Casta Diva with marvellous power , and in the Carnaval de Venise , he revelled in variations that would have bewildered a Paganini . Altogether it was a most interesting performance , and reminded us of those days when shepherds strove with gods for the prize of melody ,, and vied in music for the love of nymphs . ' Picco was assisted by the excellent band of the London Orchestral Union ( under the direction ofj Mr . Alfred Mellon ) , which played some overtures with admirable effect . Picco is announced to give five concerts next week at the Adelphi We recommend the few people who may not be assisting at Mr . Adams" Orrery , to go to hear Picco at the Adelphi ; and to see that excellent actor Mr . Em eky ( of the Olympic ) , who provides an original , and most attractive entertainment at Drury-lane .

Jenny Likd and the Nightingale : Fund . —Madame Lind G-olpsohwidt , tho ever-benevolent—^ the morally as well as artistically musical—gave a concert on Tuesday evening , at Exeter Ha . ll , in aid of the Nightingale Fund . She sang several of the finest productions of Mendelssohn and other modern musicians , and was in the fullest glory of her grace and power . When to this was added the reflection that the performance was to advance a noble design what wonder -that the building overflowed , or that the audience was in transports from first to last ? .
