ABSTRACT OF PROSPECTUS . . . ^ It has been for some years past a matter of notoriety that British and lris . lr linen manufacturers , and also manufacturers of hempen goods , have materially suffered from a dclicient supply of flax and hemp . This state of deficient supply arisp ' B from the fact that the cultivation of flax jn Great Britain has materially decreased instead of increased with the growing ' requirements of ourlineau manufactures . Our national commercial statistics show that , out of 150 , 000 tons of flax annually consumed In the United Kingdom , not more than 50 , 000 tons aro of home growth . In addition to this enormous importation of flax tor our linen manufactures , we have also imported hundreds of thousands of quartors of linseed every year for homo consumption . The linen manufacturers of the United Kingdom havo declared that they arc ready to take any quantity which can be grown « t home , and at such prices as will be more remunerative to the agriculturist than the usual produce of ljifl lands . . The promoters of tho National Flax Company aro prepared to prove to the agriculturists of this country that no more profitable crop can be cultivated than that of flax , whenever . thoir system of rettories , and improved mechanical treatment of flax flbro , uhaU bo adopted Tin tho localities of its growth . Tho iinaln feature of tho company ' s plan is , that it will take tho trouble of preparing tho llax formarkot entirely off the . hands of tho grower , by becoming- tho purchasers of tho crop , and thus leaving tho growor entirely freo from tho hazards of bad harvesting weather , and at tho same timu ensuring him a certain handsome profitable return fpr all tho flax ho can produce and delivor to tho company' 8 depots a » d rottorles , Tho company ' s operations will also embrace the whole of tho requisite process of proparing tho flax and similar fibrous substances ready for the P t 1 io fi ' yfltom of preparation adopted by this company is tho subject of a patent , tho invention of Mr . George Albomnrlo Cntor , n . gentleman who has made tho cultivation of flax and ita preparation for the spinner his ospecial stwdy for many years , past , ho having fully demonstrated the arroat economy of labour ami tho very great Improvement In ftio quality of tho flax flbro , which fa tho result ol hia , Improved system of flax preparation ,. The system will bo found fully detailed in tho " Explanatory Pamnhloton Flax Cultivation and Propiiration , " fo be had . iroo from the Secretary of tho company and its ngonts ; in which will also bo found an exposition of the « reat Importance of tho homo cultivation offlnx , « b UnsurJnff a regular supply of raw material to the vory important national manufactures of Unon nnrt hompen goods \ hnlf-Btuff for papor-makorB } anil the . ailCl UiailUActUlul l W ^ l-L lvru . uiiuugu ** . L * ouigu . It is estimated that two rettories , on the scale proposed as the base of operations , will require eight patent machines , and , if constantly at work for ( say ) 309 days in the year , will produce annually 1 , 200 tons of flax-fibre , 7 , 500 quarters of linseed , and 900 tons of tows ; and allowing- £ 50 per ton to be obtained for the flax -fibre , 5 Cs . per quarter for the linseed * and £ 5 per ton for the tows , there is a gross yield of £ 85 , 500 . Assuming- that it will take as much aB ten tons of flaxstraw unseeded to produce one ton of flax-fibre ,, at a cost of 41 . per ton , and 181 . per ton of fibre for all expenses , the total outlay will be 69 , 000 ? ., leaving a balance to be divided of 15 , 900 ? ., or nearly i 30 per ' cent ; lipon 55 , 000 ? . ( the cost of the buildings , plant ; and machinery , together Mdth a sufficient working- capital , for two rettoriesX which is wholly irrespective of the dividend that may be expected from licence dues- from other rettories ; . ana as the operations of _ the company are extended , the dividends will be in proportion . The peculiar advantages of Selby , in Yorkshire , and the surrounding- flaxi-oTdwing districts ,- have decided the company on establishing- their first rettory in that neighbourhood .- ' ¦ ' ¦ ••'¦ ' ....: ' . ¦ .. ' . ¦ . " ' A prospective enterprise of tliis company being--the ciiltivation of flax on reclaimable lands , of which in tne United Kingdom there are some millions of acresj it is considered the company may beneficially turn its attention to the acquirement , in due course , of aa available property in such lands . . The National Flax Company will , by increasing the cultivation of flax in the present growing districts , tend to encourage the population of other parts of the country . to acquire the requisite knowledge of an industrial resource by which their local labour will Tt > ecome more profitable , and land of greater value . Again , the fast-extending application ; of the power-loom to flax fibre will greatly increase the demand for flax . All considered , the circumstances of tne times combine to establish the present enterprise as the nucleus of a new branch oflbusiness , ' and a most valuable auxiliary to the farming and manufacturing producers of : he United ¦ Kingdom ,. and one which is well calculated to itill fiirtner develope her prosperity . Copies of the prospectus , and all further information , nay be obtained at the Oflices of the Company , ll ) 3 , Grcshim-housc . City . . .
