THEATRES , &c . Time aiix Dames ! Before commencing the critique on the week ' s performances I am not going to write , I have to answer a fair correspondent , who , under the signature of "Arabella" ( which my natural sagacity at once pronounced to be an assumed name ) first complains that I have neglected the Theatres of late 5 and next asks me a delicate question touching ft certain process of heightening the female beauty . . - - , On the complimentary charge of having teen neglectful , my reply is two-fold . There has been nothing doing at the Theatres which demanded critical attention , unless you consider Brooke at Drury Lane , and Miss Cushman at the HairnetfiiK —bothplayingoldand wellknownparts—ought to have coerced a critic to rub hfo opera-glass , and rub up Aristotle . You may consider that debntological . Privately , I differ from you . But , at any rate , I have had my reason ? for staying away , which the reader—especially the female reader—would acknow ledge as sufficient . Next weok , indeed , there will be novelties . To-night the Baymarket produces a comedy ; on Monday , the Olympic , a legendary drama . I have been readipg Longinus and Mr . Blair in anticipation . - 3 ' , - . The postscript question put by , " Arabella" h ^ the following : —Ob it true that women stand over the fumes of charcoal to make their eyes more ; bright ? "Arabella doubts it , but has heard it gravely stated ; Vivian has not heard it stated , but he gravely doubts . Opium gives an unusual distension to the pupil < of the eye ; but the effect is not permanent , and after repeating that dangertius t expe | inxent a few times the effect ceases altogether . Kouge gives Justre ^ tlie eye ^ - but unhappily rouge itself is discernible , and its moral effect on the beholder iB dangerous . I know but of two safe , certain , wholesome methods of iticrej ( sin ^ the lustrous splendour of the eye : —the first is active zeroise—the second is to look into the eyea of one truly loved , and let the soul flash ? incommunisabie meanings into the soul of some " wretch" like :....
