faculty , might have been effective . But the i
Now , this is really a good dramatic situation . But to make it one of interest as well as truth very different treatment was necessary . In the first place , the author should , have interested us in the Duchess . He has cot done so . We qnite sympathise with the Duke ' s weariness . We "« fto ^ not see adequate motive for her silence on that ugly chapter in her early life . She , a woman whose truth is somewhat fatiguingl ^ dwelt upon , she who is said ( not shown ) to love the Duke with devoted passion , would have told him of her infancy —told him of her father , ^ . t any rate * she would hate wished to tell him ; wished that no such hideous secret should remain a secret from her lover ; and in tfaie struggle of such truthful instinct with natural , shrinking from revealing such a secret , a dramatist would have found glWious opportunity . I can ( . imagine such a woman constantly impelled to tell her husband , and yet constantly restrained either by his carelessness or her shyness ; and so the tiling gets put off till her perception of his no longer caring for her makes the idea of an avowal too appalling . Theii— "when her mind was , in this sjate—the reappearance of her father would have been tragic But in Mr . Chorley's play the father appears just as all fathers appear in melodrames ; and melo-dramatic issues are all that we have . She is suspected of Saving been his mistress . He murders her lujisband in a sudden and : almost ludicrous manner ; and she retires into a convent . ., This outline is filled up with a number of episodes , not one of which do I
understand . She is made jealous of her husbana ^ -but nothiag comes of W jealousy . Her husband is made to love , or to have loved , thf Lady FitffcP but nothing comes of it ; and whether he loves or lovea not is wrapped ^ M obscurity . There » a villanous courtier of the Iago school named cJuit Abelard ^ whom , on the stage , they persist in calling Abbilard-but his acts and motives jare all mysterious and melodramatic . In short , it is p , strancA medley of hints , notes , and intentions , none of which rise into dramatic clearness and purpose . Let me , however , be just even iri details . Theiunts and intentions were often good ; the situations sometimes striking . The whole of the second act was impressive , and parts of the scene in Bellotto ' s hut , in the third , rivetted attention ; My criticism points rather to organic defects , which defects prevented the isolated merits from driving away the ennui produced by the whole . . y . ' ¦ -. ' . ' .
The play is wearisome because it is not true , but still more so because it is not clear . Jt is made up of small details , nowhere && broad massive clearness of dramatic effect . ?• Tjiere is some , good ^^ w ^^ iiig ^ every npW f iM then , -but it is in half lines . COBN MARKET . . Mark Lane , Friday Evening , March 17 . Loca . 1 TBASB .-Th . ere are this week again liberal supplies of Wheat and Flour , and moderate of Oats and Barley . The demand for Wheat remains in the same sluggish state as on Monday , and to effect sales lower . prices must be taken ; but at the same time few holders are disposed to submit to a further decline .- —Barley and O * ts remain as on Monday . : , . , F . O . B .-r-Prices recede in the Baltio ports , and there are a ^ good many offers in hand , but buyers are not willing to come forward at present , and we hear of no transactions of moment since last week . . . . Pioatinck Tbajde . —We have again some arrivals this week;—say forty-two cargoes in all . For the time the bade is at a standstill . We Know , up to the moment of writing-, of but two' sales of cargoes of all sorts—rtrtz ., one Wheat and one Barley , the latter at 28 a . The price , quoted for tli © Wheat is nigher than we supposed it possible to obtain ' in th-e present state of the market . At Liverpool < some extremely low sales of Maize and Flour have taken place , and the market does not appear inclined to rally at present . From France we have orders to sell Flour and Wheat . In Ireland stocks appear quite sufficient to meet the demand . The same is the case in Scotland .

MONEY MARKET AND CITY INTELLIGENCE . Friday Evening , March 17 , 1884 . Despite of the daily second edition canards , at one time breathing dire war and the next day promising the renewal of negotiations , to be surely contradicted by the Government in the- evening , in their places in both Houses , Consols maintain a steady and dull aspect . Speculators are sick of bearing , and purchasers , apparently , have done their utmost . All railway shares are heavy , and the great feature during the week beyond the Consols [ account and the bi-monthly share-settling , has been the languid and inactive state of business . The new Stock Exchange , a most commodious and very handsome building , has been opened , and is a great improvement on the old building ; the loftiness of tho hall , however , causes such reverberation that the infernal yells of the bulls and bears is likely to deafen the members occasionally . The export of bullion to the continent continues very considerable , aud during the early part of the week there was a rumour of the Bank boing about to put on the screw again ; at present , however , tliis would seem unlikely . Gold mining shares partake of the general languor . Port Boyals announce a call of 5 s . per share ; the directors of the Chartered Bank of . India , China , and Australia , seem to be at issue with tho majority of their shareholders , who are desirous of seeing the concern wound up . Consols close at four o'olock 008 , 1 . .
