T )? . Estlin , hi Reply to "Mr . Marsom on Future Punishment . Bristol ^ June 1 J , 1814 , Sir ,
The letter in your Repository for February last , containing strictures on some Discourses on Future Punishment , which , after having delivered them to a liberal and an affectionate congregation ,
I had ventured to submit to the world , and to which , two letters have since been added , occasioned in me considerable emotions of surprise , as 1 had been informed ,
from authority which I had no reason to question , that Mr . Marsom , on re-considering the subject , had embraced the doctrine of Universal Restituticn . As this
appears not to have been the case , for the sake of the further discussion , of the subject I am glad that these letters have been published , although having the greatest dislike possible to controversy
when it degenerates into personality , and having reason to believe that the business will be taken up toy others * I should have been glad to retire from the combat ,

of application of texts of scijp-r ture , we seem to have no coniniOjEi principles from which to reason ., or to which to refer .
Oa Mr . Marscm ' s account I sincerely wish that the information which I received respecting his change of opinion had been correct , as in consequence of this different view of the design ,
conduct and end of the Divine Administration , the remainder of his life , which I apprehend has been chequered like my own , would have been much more serene and
comfortable ; and that event which is so near to hirri and myself , and which , with his view of the scenes beyond it , must be contemplated with horror , would then have been contemplated with satisfaction apd
even with joy . I can truly assure him that I feel lio sentiments of ill will towards him . Hadl the subject been less momentous * 1 should have read his letters ; . iin- » .
founded as most of his assertions and all his censures appear to me , with a smile . 1 believe we have never met , and if is probable thai we shall never meet in this world *
Regarding death , however , as no sensible loss of existence , I trust we shall shortly meet in that worl 4 ^ where those feelings which * are the effect of human imperfection cease to operate ; and that we shall
there meet as friends . Having heard him spoken of as a man of sterling integrity , which I jxiost readily assent to , although dissenting so widely from him in opu
iiion , lam sorry that I ajn com * pel led by every motive which pan influence . 'the . man and t } ie Chri ^ tian , to inflict upon his feelings & temporary wound . A physician of the mind J should be vajtt tp
