Battle , we shall have occasion to speak mare particularly , in a subsequent part of our Report .
On the 18 th July , Mr * . Wright set out on a tour in Yorkshire , Lancashire ami parts of the adjoining counties , which occupied him nearly fourteen weeks . He was accompanied by Mr . Frederick Horsfield , formerly a student under Mr . Aspland , in the Academy at Hackney , and now completing his preparation for the Ministry with Dr . Morell at Brighton . Mr . Wrig-ht speaks in the highest terms of the assistance rendered him by Mr . Horsfield , and of the general acceptability and usefulness of his services .
Extracts from Mr . Wright ' s Journal will be inserted in the Christian Reformer , for the information . of Subscribers , He visited , in the course of his journey , many places for tfae first time , and several in which Unitarianism had never been preached before . Of the latter class was T 6 d-
morden , a populous manufacturing village , nine miles from Rochdale , partly in Lancashire and partly in Yorkshire , where it is hoped the foundation has been laid , by his labours , of a permanent congregation . This place was recommended to Mr . Wright ' s notice by Mr . Astley , of Halifax , and he went , accompanied by Mr . Elliot , of Rochdale , on a week-day , andt
preached in the evening , in a warehouse , to about 200 hearers . Mr . Wright afterwards preached there three times on a Sunday , and Mr . Horsfield on the Sunday following , to congregations varying in number from about 150 to 500 , A plan was formed for a regular week-night lecture , by Mr . Afchworth , Mr . Elliot and other preachers in the neighbourhood ; a supply of tracts was voted by the Manchester Tract Society ; and steps were taken towards forming an Unitarian Library . Ci Altogether ( says Mr , Wright )
the prospect is highly promising . Already there are several well-informed and firm Unitarians , and numbers of others inquiring and well-disposed to the cause . " The other places at which the Unitarian doctrine had not before been preached , were ,
1 . Browbridge . Mr . Wright preached here twice ; once in Mr . Cartledge ' s court-yard , to a large company of people , consisting of Calvinists , Methodists , & c . and once in a large room which is used as a preachingroom bj the Methodists . 2 . Jagger-green , a village near Elland , where a room was obtained in which the Calvinists usually preach , and a large audience attended .
3 . Lindle-y , JBrighoitse , JMirfield , ( where the Curate had on the preceding Sunday warned his hearers against Mr . Wright , by name , and conjured them not to listen to his abominable doctrine , but without success , ) Horley ^ Cropland , ( where a Methodist allowed the use of his house for Unitarian preaching , ) Sa / ter-Hebble and Ovenden . At these places , which are villages in the vicinity of Halifax or Huddersfield , Mr . Wright preached in lar ^ e rooms , or in the open air , to congregations both numerous and attentive .
At Radcliff ' e , Rochdale , Meanwood , Lowerplaee , Newchurch , Rossendale , Burnley , aod Padiham , ( none of which places , except the two first mentioned , had ever been visited by Mr , Wright before , ) he preached in chapels , or licensed rooms , belonging to the Methodist Unitarians . Of this interesting body of converts to the Unitarian dootrine , whose accession is of incalculable importance to its spread amotigst the lower classes in that part of the country , Mr . Wright gives the foblowing account : —
" Having mentioned the different places in which we preached among the Methodist Unitarians , I have a few words to add respecting them before I quit the subject .- ^ -Tb ey are calkd Methodist Unitarians , because
