THANKSGIVING SERMONS , ARTICLE V . Preached t > ecemBer 5 , i 8 dj > , on Occasion of the Victdry of the British Fleet , under the Command of Lord Nelsen , over the Combined Fleets of France and Spain , off Cape Trafalgar , October ai , 1805 .
HeflectioThs on Victory ; a Sermon preached in Argyle Chapel , Bath . By W . Jay . Second Edition . Williams , Smith , Hatchard , and Ogle . Is .
This discourse , we are told in an advertisement , is published In consequence of the importunity of friends , and its selling so
readily as to come in a very short time to & second edition , justifies the statement . It is deeply tinctured with the spirit of piety and humanity , and though not wholly unobjectionable is
yet excellent . 2 Sana . xix . 2 . " And the victory that day was turned into mourning /* The author femarksy that his subject is victory .

Here the preacher concludes with a warm appeal to the feelings and piety of his hearers on behalf of the Patriotic Fund . Mr . Jay ' s style is animated but abrupt , and the sermon reads
less pleasantly on account of the injudicious and tasteless quotation of several stanzas from Dr . Watts * s Hymn-book . A prayer precedes the sermon , with which we are highly pleased ^
for it is composed chiefly of scripture-language . We make four brief extracts , of which fifie first is a just cfe-3 : riptioii ; the second a tender and humane reflection ; the third ' ( we are sorry to sav ) a mere conceit j the last a bold
apostrophe . 1 . cc The gloty tfoat attends the conqueror is so dazzling , that it unhappily prevents our observing sufficiently th $ wickedness of his cha * racter > the injustice of Ms means , and wretch ^ dnesg of his exploits * 2 * " Moviratiil is the Joss of lives ; for where is the humaa being that
