MR . PALMER ' S REJPLY TO MR . HOLLAND . To the Editor of the Monthly Repository I arn sorry to trouble you again so soon ; but your correspondent , Mr * John Holland , would think ixie deficient in respect to him , if I should take no notice of his letter in your last number , p . 463 * I am surprised that he should feel at all hurt by that passage in Mr . Orion ' s letter , respecting the sermoa of
the late Rev * Mr . Holland , as there ts nothing in it severe or unfriendly . But I am more surprised that he should insinuate any want of justice or candour in me , as having suppressed any part of the correspondence on the subject of inspiration , it
could not be expected of me , as the editor of Mr , Orton ' s letters , to publish all , or indeed any of the letters written to him £ > n the topics discussed in them ; nor was it in my power , as I was not in possession of any of them . Nor had I any of Mr * Orton ' s own letters ( excepting what he wrote to myself ) but what his correspondents favoured me with * Had I received any written to Mr . Holland , they would have appeared in the ^ collection .. As to the passage omitted , in the letter which Mr . J . H . quotes , expressed by the asterisks , it will surely be allowecj that I had a discretionary power to omit whatever I thoughjt improper for publication ^ without being accountable to any one ; And the sanae reason that induced me to suppress any pas * -
js age at first would prevent my giving it to the public afterwards ^ However , I will so far gratify this gentleman , as to assure hin * that the passage in question , ia Mr , Orton * s MS . had no relation to the subject of inspiration , and was of no importance whatever . If it had , he may easily suppose that it would not have been suppressed . If Mr . J . H , can find any letters of Mr . Qrto . ii to Mr . Hol-r
land , or any of Mr , Holland's to him , on inspiration , or liturgies , or any other subject , I shall be truly glad to see them in pruit : and if he or any other person is ^ ispo&ed to animad * - vert upon any thing which Mr . Orton has advanced in th $ letters which I have published , he has uiy cordial consent , a ? f Act 3 KXYl . 24 .
