t £ ie hoped-for character of the proposed Version would be best preserved , by employing the older Versions . I have often been gratified with finding * \\ $ iile attempting to translate portions of Mark ' s Gospel , that the translation which I had
formed , without any direct reference to any other , agreed with Tytidaie when it departed from th ^ commop . Version . This I considered as a presumption ^ that sometimes at least James ' s translators had not acted upon their professed intentions * But this has been repeatedly observed , I think , bv . those who hav ^ had more ^ spejrience ; 1 wili therefore leave this point .
Those who have compared !> fe \ vcome with -Grieshach ' -s second edition , must have found numerous instances ia which Newcomer ' s notices of probable omissions must be revised * It is a great defect too , that no naerftioa is roade of words actually omitted or changed , in consequence of a change in the text . Xhose who have not GriesbacR by them , cannot always tell what is to be attributed . 4 o the Translato r * what to the Critic
It appears to me , that one purpose of the proposed Version should be , to enable the unlettered thinker to ascertain where and in what respects the text of Griesbach differs from that commonly received . Now this may be effected , by inserting hi the margin , a , close traji Ration of those words of the coxninogv text , which are omitted ^ or changed for a more correct reading . Farther , as the . probable , or somewhat probable , omissions are easily noticed , and are frequently highly deserving of notice , both should be marked i * i > the text . The words , which in Oriesbach ' s estimation arc probably to be omitted , may be inclosed , as by Newcojaae , in brackets - Those whpse oqnissioni he deems ie&s probable , in semi-brackets . Those readings ' / CjJriesbach regards as probable , or somewhat probable , if susceptible of translation , should all be noticed ; but these' might be given in a table at the endranged in order , and with £ jrriesbach * s distinctive marks annexed . Iu allcases I trust that the Conductors of the proposed Version will observe , as an inviolable rule , that no critical conjectures shall be introduced into the teooi • if they judge any to deserve notice , they may find a place iu their notes . Tbe fewer of these however the better ; they are weapons , vyjiich are certainly suspicious , and which jjeed not
be . employed , -w-bile-the inean 3 of knowledge are so abundant . Jviideed I am inclined to hope ^ that they intend to keep closely to Griesbach ' s text . If they see ^ y deficiency in bis canon ^ or in their application t it may be desirable to notice it in its proper place ; but those who value Qriesbach ' s text as it cj ^ qserves , will , I think , feel most confidence and satisfaction iti a constant observance of it .
