J . M >' s Reply to the Clergyman on the Divinity of Christ \ 251

frequently make ^ the assertion ^ and palm it upon the inspired . wr iters , but the intelligent reader of the scriptures will easily detect the fraud . But the clergyman produces a text , ( 1 John , v . 20 . ) in which he says , " St . John himself says of the son , Jesus Christ , this is the true God / ' He should have told us zchose son Jesus Christ is here said to be . Let us however look at the passage ; the whole verse
is , and we know that the son of God is come ; and hath given us an understandimg , that ^ may know him , " ( that is God , comp . John , vii . 28 . xvii . 3 . 6 . 21 . ) that is true : and we are in him ,
( God ) that is true ? in , or through his ( God ' s ) son Jesus Christ . This ( that is God that is true ) is the true God and eternal life . But to this the clergyman will
undoubtedly object , that " the antecedent to his son Jesus Christ , is not father , but God ; " and " that that God , is Jesus Christ ;" and his paraphrase will be , " we know that the son of God
( that is , the son of Jesus Christ ) is come , and hath given us an understanding , that we may know him , ( that is Jesus Christ , ) that is true ; and we are in him ( that is in Jesus Christ , ) that is true ; in , or through Jiis ( that is Jesus Christ ' s ) son , Jesus Christ / ' And then will come in , with full force « nd energy , his exposition of the last clause , " this , ( that is , he that is true , Jesus Christ , whom the son of God ( that is the son of Jesus Christ , ) hath given us aa understanding to know ,, and in whom we are , through his son Jesus Christ ;) this--Jesus Christ is

the ,- true God and eternal life , " see before on 1 John , iii . j 5 . Let the reader receive this interpretation , if he can . Does not this furnish another instance of the C 6 most gross misquotation , " atid perversion of scripture ? But what follows is , if possible , a still more " daring , misquotation , " and perversion of scripture . With respect to the other title , i ( r alpha and omega , the first and
the last , " the clergyman says , ( referring to Rev . i . 11 , 17 ^) 44 The voice ^ that John heard , was the voice of the son of man , of him that liveth and was dead ; the voice therefore of Christ . St . John
consequently heard Christ de * dare himself to bp alpha and omega , the first and the last , the beginning and the ending , which was , and which / s , and xvhich is to come , the Almighty . ' * The
words , ' which was , and which is , and which is to come the Almighty , " are not said to be uttered by that voice . They are taken from the 8 th verse , which is not the words of Christ . I
have shewn * , by comparing that verse with the 4 th , that those words are a- periphrasis of the Father exclusively . This the clergyman admits ; ( u for / ' he says , " in that case , after the apostle had
styled ( ver . 8 , ) the divine Being , alpha and omega , the beginning and the ending , he afterwards similarly styles Christ , alpha and oiwega , the first and the last ,
( ver . IK 17 . ) " In which quotation he suppresses the latter clause of the 8 th verse , ( upon which the whole argument rests ;) yet notwithstanding all this , he unites those words in the latter clause
