No . 5674 . This collation may be regar ^ d as a rnodel for similar performances . The MS . had been before collated , but very
imperfectly , by Thomas Bentley . It is valuable not only on account of its text , but for much information contained in the scholia , similar to that of the Venetian
. MSS . of the Iliad , published by Villoison , respecting the readings of the ancient Alexandrian grammarians , Aristophanes , Aristarchus , Sec . Some extracts from the Scholia ,, are given in the course of the collation ; it is much to be desired that the whole were

collation of Kuhn ' s Pan manias , wjth the Aldine edition , and some materials in that of Facius ( imperfectly used by that editor ) for the purpose of forming a supplement to the edition of Kulin . i That he would have thrown much
incidental light on that writer , c ; innot be doubted by those who have observed an emendation communicated by Mr . Beloe in his Anecdotes of literature 7 and who have examined the additional

His great work , had he lived to complete it , would probably have been the publication of the Lex - icon of Photius , which exists in a single ancient copy belonging to Trinity College ^ Cambridge . A
few modern transcripts of it , generally we believe somewhat incorrect ^ have found their way to different parts of Europe . The whole of this MS . which is a folio volume , was twice transcribed
by Mr . Porson in the most careful and beautiful manner . Whether he had prepared any annotations , we know not ; the transcript however is complete , and will not , we hopc ^ be withheld from the world . To his
familiarity with this volume , Mr . Porson has been heard to observe that he was chiefly indebted for that skill in palseography , which he so eminently possessed , and which in his employment was a most powerful instrument of cri - ticism , lie was also much
occupied by a beautiful MS . of Plato , brought from Greece by Dr . Clarke ^ written in the early part of the tenth century . This MS . preserves various peculiarities of the Atcic dialect , which lire neglected in more recent
