conversation which I held lately with a we !} -di $ poscd person of orthodox sentiments . After quoting this text , 1 Tim . ii . 5 , * ' There is one God , and one mediator between God and men , the man Christ Jesus / ' I observed .
' * you would not , probably , have expressed yourself thus . Would you not have said , The God-man Christ Jesus V * He ingenuously answered ^ " I believe I should . " On the subject of many Christian doctrines it would be found , on inquiry , that the language of modern and ancient Christians
would be equally different . I . Let it be supposed that the Jew r , pricked to the heart by the declaration of Peter that " God had made that same Jesus , whom they had crucified , both Lord and Christ , " in their astonishment and agony , had put , to
ministers of the present day , who assume the respectable name of gospel or evangelical ministers , the question which they so solemnly asked the apostles . Let us imagine them asking , 4 * 31 en and brethren , what shall we do I " What resource have we in so tre

And I will venture to say , that Peter ' s answer would not be given by our popular ministers , and for this reason , because they invariably return very different ones , if they give a true account of themselves . No case can bo

and sufficient remedy . It is re . commended seriously , to ministers especially , and , under such awful circumstances , to ask themselves , " What would Peter have
said on such and such ah occasion , and what has he said on a similar one V It is recommended , also , to Christian people , to ask themselves " Would the Apostle
Peter have spoken thus to me in my situation ? Did he speak thus to the Jews , self-convicted of having put to death the Son of God ?"
II . It will be acknowledged , by all serious and reflecting men , that the right worship of Almighty God is a most important concern , whether the object or acts of worship be considered . On this head , let ministers and
people examine well the language which they use , and solemnly reflect on that used by the founders of Christianity . Would they adopt the words of Christ , John iv . 22 , 23 ? Where he says ,
" We know what we worship . The hour cometh ( and now is , ) when the true worshippers shall worship the father—the true worshippers shall worship him in spirit and in truth . " It is presumed that few would hazard a >\ xok
