Art . III . —A more extended Discussion in Favour erf Liberty of Conscience , recommended by the Rev . Christopher Wyvill . § vo > pp . 22 . Second Edition . Johnson .
Mr . Wyvill i& a veteran in the cause of liberty and reform . He is a clergyman of the church of England ; his opinions do not oblige him to leave the establishment ; but he lately , from a principle of duty and conscience , resigned the living of Black Notley , in the county of Essex , ( see M .-Repos . Vol . i . p . 667 . ) Still anxious , in advanced age , to serve mankind , Mr- W . proposes in this publication to promote a discussion on the rights of conscience , which shall lead to the abolition of all the persecuting statutes which . disgrace our statute book , and to a complete toleration . He thinks the debates in parliament on the subject of Catholic emancipation , have prepared the public mind for the discussion on general principles . We cannot but wish success to this truly patriotic and Christian design . It is honourable to Englishmen and woTthy of the ge * nuine disciples of Christ . But we are not sanguine in our expectations of the result ; yet it would be wrong to discourage the plan . What could be more improbable than that Clarkson should have succeeded in destroying the accursed trade in African flesh and blood ? And perhaps there is now as general an abhorrence of persecution for conscience sake , as in the outset of his philanthropic career there was of the Slave-trade . This work shall be always at the service of Mr . Wyvill and his friends , who have publicly declared their e , nmity to religious into *
