    Writers on Materialism ,, Letter I .

    Sir , Jan . 3 , 1811 . In my occasional rambles , among old books , I not long since procured a few volumes which I have reason to think are now very little known They brought me to an acquaintance with two writers who , more than a century ago , maintained , upon Christian principles , and with no small learning and acuteness , the natural mortality of man , and the doctrine of a resurrection , as affording the only rational hope , as well as assigning the commencement of a future life . These writers were Dr . Coward and Mr . Layton , who appear to have passed through much evil report among

    their contemporaries , for controverting established notions . Their memory also has been treated with uncommon neglect , even by those who have gamed deserved

    reputation in the same walks of theology . 1 am not aware that Hartley or Priestley mentions either of them , perhaps having never met with their writings . These , from the

    circumstances which may be further noticed , must have stolen into the world . Bishop Law merely refers to Layton in a note to

Coward , though it does not appear that he had with Layton even a personal acquaintance .

    I have entered into these particulars that you may judge hour far it might suit the design and engagements of your work to preserve an account , somewhat at large , of these books , and the very little which can now be known

    respecting their authors ^ especially Mr . Layton . Such an account would , of course , include a view of the controversy and the state of public opinion upon these important topics , at the commencement of the last century .
