Rev . George Hodgkins . The Rev . John Evans , by the united request of the widow and congregation , preached Mr . Hodgkins"' funeral sermon , at Stoke Newington , Sunday Morning-, Oct . 30 , 1814 , to a large and respectable auditors , f rom Acts ? . Q <* And
when he had spoken these things , while they beheld he was taken up and a cloud received him out of their sight / ' Mr . E . towards the close of his Address gave the
following sketch of the character of his friend , the first part of which Was communicated to him by a venerable and much-respected relative of the deceased , who was present on the occasion .
" The Rev . George Hodgkins was born at HaJes-owen , in the county of Salop , July 14 , 1765 . Providence removed both his parents at an early age . ** On the death of his very amiable and pious mother , he was taken under the kind care and very affectionate attention of her mother and
sister , the latter of whom is still living to lament his death . Discovering a good capacity and a thirst for knowledge , he was put under the instruction of a worthy clergyman , who was at the head of a Free

Institution at Carmarthen , under the patronage of the Presbyterian Fund in London , and the superintendence and tuition of the Rev . Robert Gentleman , on whose removal he was received into the Academical
Institution at Daventry , under the patronage of Mr . Coward ' s trust , where he pursued his studies , and completed his course of education witli credit to himself , and to the entire approbation of his tutors .
" At this time the advanced years and infirmities of the pious and excellent Mr . Townsend , rendering an assistant desirable , Mr . Hodgkins was applied to , and chosen into that situation in the year 1789 , ia which he remained until Mr . Ts .
resignation of his ministerial and pastoral charge , to which the deceased was unanimously called , and into which he was introduced by solemn ordination ; on which a very affectionate and faithful charge was delivered by his uncle , the Rev .
