« Literary . - ^ 35 K ey . Dr . Abraham Rj ' s ^ J ^^ length co ^ npiete ^ L his ^ reat wori , ^ the Cyclopaedia > in 39 volumes , 4 t 6 . ^ a lasting monument of his ^ science ,, talents , judgment and industry ^ and the largest contribution from any one individual
to ihe literature of his country . The liherai spirit that pervades t | ie whole work , wherever controverted questions are brought forward , ' is its praise and recommendation ; but this trait of
excellence has i ^ ot excited universal approbation . The work is not dedicated to the King , though the last edition of Chambers ' s PJctionary by the present Editor was dedicated by permission to his late Majesty , and it is said that certain bigoted influence has prevented this being done . We have heard also' of a Doctor
in Divinity , well beneficed in the Church , and' not far from one of the great seats of learning , who had subscribed to the Cyclopaedia for years , and was accustomed to consult it on all occasions as an authority , but who heard at length that the Editor was a Dissenting minister and a
reputed Unitarian , and thereupon very wisely and piously returned ajl the Numbers to his bookseller , declaring that no such work could possibly be suffered to remain in his library . In the next Index Eatpurgatorius from Rome , we confidently expect to find the Cyclopaedia ^ The Conclave cannot be less watchful of
orthodoxy than an English Vicar , though that Vicar be a Doctor of Divinity , and in His Majesty ' s Commission of the Peace . Since writing the above , we have heard with great pleasure that Dr . Rees , the veuerable Editor of the Cyclopaedia is , at the request pf many persons of various
denominations , preparing for the press two additional v 61 umes of " Practical Sermons , " similar to those that he formerly published , of which two considerable editions have been sold , with llie exception of about twenty copies . They will soon be . committed to the press and published early in tlie spring .
