Literary Joint-Stock Companies . — la this age of speculation , we have societies for aiding Literature and drawing a revenue from it . One of these is entitled , * ' Society for the Encouragement of Literature , " with a capital of £ 100 , 000 in shares of £ 25 . The object of the company is to purchase copy-rights at their fair value , and thus to protect and encourage authors , but without interfering with the established trade of the bookseller . The profits are calculated to arise from the sale of the works purchased by
the society and printed with all the advantages of ready money payments . One fourth of these is to form a fund for the benefit of authors ; the remainder to be divided among the proprietors or to
accumulate as capital with a view to such division ultimately . " The 8 ociety will not be biassed by party-feelings ; but will be open to the reception of all works that do not militate against good order and morality / ' Each share entitles its possessor to one copy of every work pub .
