spirit of ChristVreligion ] he cannot enter into the kingdom of God . That , which is born of the flesh , is flesh ; and that , which is born of the spirit , is spirit . Wonder not that I said unto thee , " Ye must be born again " . The wind bloweth where it will , and thou nearest its voice , but knowest not whence it cometh , or whjthej ^ Jt j ^ Nicodemus answered and said unto him : ' How can these things be ? ' Jesus answered and said unto him : ' Art thou a teacher of
Israel , and knowest not these things ? verily , verily I say unto thee , that , which we know , we speak , and that , which we have seen , we testify , but ye receive not our testimony . If I have told you earthly things , and ye believe not ; how will ye believe , if I tell you heavenly things ? And no one hath ascended into heaven [ L e . attained to a knowledge of these heavenly things ] except he who descended from heaven ; [ i . e . derived his knowledge frotn heaven ;] even the son of man , who is , in heaven .
[ i . e . is in constant communion with his heavenly Father . ] And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness , so must the Son of man be lifted up ; that every one / who believeth in him may not perish , but have everlasting life . ' [ The words of Jesus probably end here , the rest being the remarks of the Evangelist . ] For God so loved the world , as to give his only-begotten son , that everyone who believeth in him , might not perish , but have everlasting life . For God sent not his Son into the world to
condemn the world , but that the world might be saved through him . He who believeth in him , is not condemned ; but he who believeth not , is already condemned , because he hath not believed in the name of the only-begotten Son of God . This is the condemnation [ or the cause of the condemnation ] that light is come into the world , but men have loved darkness rather than the light , because their deeds were evil . For every one who doeth evil ,
hateth the light , and cometh not to the light , lest his deeds should be discovered . But he who doeth the truth , cometh to the light s that his deeds may be manifested to have been wrought in God . [ This whole discourse evidently conveys a rebuke upon Nicodemus for not daring to avow his convictions in open day ; and it is probable that the obscurity of its metaphorical language was employed for a similar purpose . ]
JESUS RETIRES INTO JUDEA , WHEN JOHN AGAIN TESTIFIES OF HIM . John in . 22—36 . After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land Mi 2 fi C or countr y 3 of Judea ; and there he tarried with them ' and baptized . John also was baptizing in Mnon , near Salem , because there was much water there ; and the people came to him and were baptized ; for John was not yet cast into prison . 1 ' herv arose a , question between some of John ' s disciples and a ,
