reconciled to thy brother , and then come and offer thy gift . Agree " with thine adversary quickly , while thou art on the way with him ; lest the adversary deliver thee up to the judge , and the judge deliver thee to the officer , and thou be cast into prison . Verily I say unto thee , thou shalt not come out thence , until thou have paid the last Farthing . ' [ See Luke xii . 58 , 59 . ]
- ^ r- 'Y ^ rTaTrteli r ^ not commit adultery . * But I say unto you : Whosoever looketh on -a [ married ] woman to desire her , hath already committed adultery withher in his heart . If therefore thy right eye cause thee-4 ©^ offend , pluck it out , and cast it from thee ; for it is better for thee to lose one o £ -thy members , than that thy whole body be cast into hell [ or Gehenna ] . And if thy right hand cause thee to offend , cut it off , and cast it from thee ; for it is better for thee
to lose one of thy members , than that thy whole body be cast into hell . [ See Mark ix . 43—48 . ] It was also said : [ Deut . xxiv . 1 . ] ' Whosoever shall put away his wife , let him give her a writing of divorcement . ' But I say unto you : Whosoever shall put away his wife , except on account of fornication , causeth . her to commit adultery ; and whosoever shall marry her , who hath been put away , committeth adultery . " [ See Luke xvi . 18 . ]
" Again ye have heard that it was said to the ancients : [ Lev . xix . I 24 ' Thou shak . not forswear thyself , but [ Numb . xxx . 2 . ] shalt perform unto the Lord [ Jehovah ] thine oaths . ' But I say unto you : Swear not at all ; neither by heaven , for it is God ' s throne . ; nor by the earth , for it is his footstool ; nor by Jerusalem , for it is the city of the great king ; nor swear by thy head , for thou canst not make one hair white or black . But let your word be , yea [ for ] yea , and nay [ for ] nay ; for whatever exceedeth these , is of evil . "
" Ye have heard that it was said : [ Exod . xxi . 24 . ] Eye for eye , and tooth for tooth . ' But I say unto you : Resist not evil ; but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek , turn to him the other also ; and to him , who would sue thee at law and take thy coat , give up thy cloak also ; and whosoever shall compel thee to go one mile , go with him two . To him , who asketh thee , give ; and from him , who would borrow of thee , turn not away . "
** Ye have heard that it was said : [ Lev , xix . 18 , ] ' Thou shalt love thy neighbour , and [ Deut . xxjii . 6 . ] hate thine enemy / But I say unto you : Love your enemies 5 bless them , who curse you ; do good to them ,, who . ha , te you , ; and pray for them , who injure and persecute you ; that ye may be sons of your father who is in heaven ; for he causeth his sun to rise upon tho , evil and the good , and sendethrain upon the righteous and the unrighteous . For if ye love them , who love you , what reward have ye [ or are ye entitled to ?] do not even the publicans the * same ? And if ye ^ alute your brethren onty , what extraordinary do ye ? do not even the gentiles so ? Be ye therefore perfect ; as your father in heaven is perfect , " ^
