Luke vi . 27—36 . " But I say unto you , who hear : Love your enemies ; do good to them , who hate you ; bless them , who curse you ; and pray for them , who injure you . To him , who smiteth thee on the [ one ] cheek , offer the other also ; and from him , who taketh away thy cloak , withhold not thy coat also > To every Qjiej _ jtyj ho ^ si £ ejjx
Ihee , give ; and from him , who taketh away thy goods , ask them not again . And as ye would that men should do unto you , do ye also to them likewise . If ye love them , who love you , what thanks have ye [ or are ye entitled to ?] for even sinners love those who love them . And if ye do good to them , who do good to you , what thanks have ye ? for even sinners do the same . And
if ye lend to them , from whom ye hope to receive , what thanks have ye . ? for even sinners lend to sinners , that they may receive as much again . But love your enemies , and do good , and lend hoping for nothing again ; and your reward shall be great , and ye shall be sons of the Most High ; for he is kind to the unthankful and the evil . - Be ye therefore compassionate , as yoiir father is compassionate . "
CAUTIONS AGAINST HYPOCRISY . Matthew vi . 1—18 » " -Beware not to do-your [ acts of ] righteousness before men , irr order to be seen by them ; otherwise ye have no reward from your father who is in heaven . " " When therefore thou givest . alms , sound not a trumpet before
thee , as the hypocrites do in the synagogues , and in the streets , that they may be glorified by men ; verily I say unto you , they have [ i . e . already have ] their reward , [ the praise of men , which is the reward they seek ] . But when thou givest alms , let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth ; that thine alms may be in secret ; and thy father , who seeth in secret , himself will reward thee openly . "
ec And when thou prayest , be not as the hypocrites ; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues , and at the corners of the streets , that they may appear unto men ; verily I say unto you , they have their reward . But thou , when thou prayest , enter into thy closet / and having shut thy door , pray to thy father who is in secret ; and thy father , who seeth in secret , will reward thee openly . And when ye pray , babbie , not , as the gentiles ; for they
think that they shall be heard for their much speaking . Be not ye therefore like them ; for your father knoweth what things ye have need of , before ye ask him . Thus therefore pray ye :. ' Our father whcu art in heaven , hallowed be thy name ; thy kingdom come ; thy / will be done , as in heaven , so also on earth ; give us to day oitv daily bread ; and forgive us our debts , as we also forgive our debtors ; and bring us not into temptation , but deliver us from evil / For if ye forgive men their trespasses , your heavenly
