How serene and glorious is ' the coming on of eve , ' its holy quiet unbroken save by the vesper hymn of these plumed warblers , and the low murmur of the leaves falling on the ear like the soft mystic anthem of blessed spirits , and filling the heart with I know not what of deep and sacred emotions ! Slowly , sadly drops one
lonely leaf , unheeded by its tribe . On them and for them still shines the summer sun . May not fancy image it an emblem of some bright hope crushed ere the young heart has been ' seared by the autumn blast of grief ? earth ' s pilgrimage is made so fair , and heaven's home open to all its wanderers ? Beams not that chaster light the moon , now rising above those trees , ' but shortly eloquent with nature ' s minstrelsy , ' for all God ' s heritage ? In every land she tells the same tale ; and , as she waxeth and waneth in her course , bids man throughout the earth , adore him who , in ihe ' greaterand the lesser light' equally thus distributes his blessing . Earth is not fairer ,
her produce more fragrant or more abundant , in those lands where the gospel note has been heard and welcomed , and where its inspiration has been received in the understanding , than where its consoling truths are strangers . Over all lands the spirit of love is cast . In the perfumed groves of the east , through the beautiful savannas and spicy islands oC the west , amidst the burning deserts or fragrant fields of Araby , on the rude shores of Lapland , by th §
