GOOD NEWS FOR THE MILLION . '' Opifer per orbem dicor . '' T ) ALEY , the greatest of moral philosophers " , truly X enumerates children as among tbe principal sources of human happiness . —At bo period is human life fo precarious as in the early stages of infancy ; for it is a fact no less lamentable than true , that a the least one half the ehilure » born in Great Britain perish in a state of infancy . Of thege , g ome die for want of- medicine , but by far the greater portion from the abuse of it . Pernicious stupefactives , whose basi < is laudanum or other opiates , are conrtantly administered to tender infant * , especially among , the poarer clasoes . These dangerous compounds allay pain for a time by stupefying tbe senses , but ultimatel y leave the agonised little sufferer in a worse state than before . The ignorant and deluded
though anxious , well-meaning , and affectionate mother , thus procures herself a little more ease from nursing , but her darling child either shortl y perishes , or , if it survive , it is only to pass its mortal pilgrimage ( from its constitution having been thus enervated and undermined ) in a state of lethargic inseusibility . Deeply impressed with the magnitude of these serieus evils , and animated with a trul y philaathr . Qi ) ic zeal to arrest their progress , it was that thW ^ late Mr . Atkinson ( a man of original talent , and of superior intellectual attainments generall y , as weil as a skilful chemist and apothecary ) directed hio best energies to the formation of a compound suited to the various complaints of infants . His laudable efforts were at length crowned with the success they go well merited , in the production of that most invaluable preparation ,
ATKINSON'S INFANTS' PRESERVATIVE which has now stood tbe test of analyzition , the test of trial , and . ab « ve all , the fiery ordeal of public opinion for nearly half a century , and of which fifty thousand bottles are annually sold in Great Britain * ! In short , whether this medicine be destined to enter the palace or the humblest cottage , the proprietor alike feels an honest conviction of it * power to ag-< uage maternal pain for infant suffering ; to convert that pain into gladness that suffering into balmy repose .
As a preventive against , and a cure for those complaints to which infants aru liable , as affections of the bowels , difficult teething , convulsions , rickets , Sec , it is a pleasant , innocent , and efficacious carminative ; and an admirable assistant to nature during the progress of the hooping cough , the laeasles , and the cow pox , or vaccine inoculation Prepared only by Robert Barker , ( nephew and successor to , and formerly partner with Mr . Atkinson , ) ehemist and druggist , No . 1 , Marketplace , Manchester , in moulded bottles , at It . l £ d 2 s . 9 d ., and 4 s . 6 d . each . Sold retail by most repecuble druggists in town and country , and may be had wholesale of tbe proprietor , and at the usual medicine houses in London .

PERU . Advices from Lima of the 23 d represent the situation of the Chilian forces as hopeless . They were retreating northward along the Cordillera road , dostly-followed by Santa Cruz . Accounts fro m Tmxillo , some days later , state that Santa Croz was totall y defeated by the Chilians on the 20 th of January , at a place called Pe ' rian , near Huaraz ; but as these accounts are founded chiefl y-on the verbal statement of a Chilian officer , and are at variance with , all probability , they may be well deubted . LIMA . The editor of the Baltimore Patriot has been favoured with the following letter , dated Lima Jan . 21 , 1839 : — The Chilian and federal armies aren » w in tht department of Huaylas , about 100 leagues fron Lima , at a distance of a few leagues from eact other ; and the opinion fe . jgeat .-ral that , unless tht Chilians attempt a further retreat , nothing decisive will take place for gome time ; Both armies are in strong positions , and the rainy seasons in the elevated positions they bold "between tbe two chains of thi Audesis unfavourable for military operations .
The Chilians escaped , being forced into a general action a few days ago , by cutting the bridges in theii retreat . Five armed vessels have recently sailed from Callao , in the hope of being able to take oi destroy part of the Chilian transports on the let coast , and if they succeeded even partially a general action is inevitable .

W . 13 , Trafalgar Street , ( back entrance in Nile Street ) , Leeds , and every Thursday , at No . 2 , Dead Lane , Bradford , continue * to eradicate every species of infection . In recent cases , a perfect cure is completed within one week , or no charge made for medicines after the expiration of that period .
He hopes that the successful , easy , and expeditious mode he has adopted , ot eradicating every lymptom of a Certain Disease , without any material alteration in diet , or hindrance of business , and yet preserving the constitution in full vigour and free from injury , will establish his claimi * for support . As this Di * ea « e is one which is likely to be contracted whenever exposure take « place , it it not like n&ny ether visitors , once in life , but on the contrary , one infection may scarcely have been removed , when another may unfortunately be imbibed , therefore the Practitioner requires realjudg raent in order to treat each particular Case in such a manner aa not merely to remove the present attack , but to preserve the constitution unimpaired , in cane of a repetition at no distant period . Tht man of experience can avail himself of the greatest
mprovement * in modem practice , by being able to distinguish between disebarges of a « pecific and of a simple or mild nature , which can only be made by one in dail y practice after due consideration of all circumstances . Patients labouring under this disease cannot be too cautious into whose hands they commit themselves . The Propriety of this remark is abundantl y manifest by the same Patient frequently passing the Ordeal of several Praetitioners before he is fortunate enough to obtain a perfect Cure . The following are some of the many symptoms that distinguish this Disease : —a general debility , eruptions on the head , face , and body ; ulcerated seretbroats , scrofula , iwellings in the neck , nodes on the shin bones , chancres , fistula , pains in the head and limbs , which are frequently mistaken for rheumatism . &c . &c .
COPY OF A LETTia . Mr . WILKINSON , —Sir , having had the misfortune , about four years since , contract ' a long-to-be lamented most dentruetive complaint , which no doubt would have proved fatal ere now , had it noi been for your invaluable skill , which I can safel y say has saved my constitution from utter destruction . I have been under several experienced practitioners , and have been apparently well for a short time , but ever experienced a relapse which evidently resulted from patched-up and improper treatment , or some secret lurking in the frame which was never rooted , With great reluctance I was advised by a friend to apply to you . At that time I was afflicted with ulceratei sores in my mouth , horrible taste and bad
emell , blotches on different parts of ray body , with great pain and swellings in the bones , particularly my leg * , with hard lumps on my shins , which I am now satisfied would soon have proved fatal . After taking your medicine for afe * weeks , my sores as . sumed a healing disposition , my taste and smell got gradually better , my pains entirely left roe , and I have increased in both jtren ^ th , health , and ? puiit ? , and am now without fear cf any return of theootnplaint . Being convinced there are numbers of my fellow creatures similarly afflicted , and for their good , I request you will publish this in the paper , only be so good as omit my name . Yourn respectfully , C . B . Leeds , October 4 th , 1838 .
