WHBON , — STOJTEMASONS A SSOCIAT 1 ON . — This association he'd their usual weekly meeting on Saturday evening , at the Craven Head , Drary-lane , which was more numerously attended than usual Mr . Joseph Mison in the chair . Mr . John Campbell , secretary to the Executive , in a brief speech applauded , tbe tradea of Manchester foi the manner they had « omo oat for the Charter , and contended for the necessity of the trades of London following their example , which to all appearance was fully appreciated by those present Mr . Cooper , from " Manchester , next addressed them , and after corroborating all that the former speaker had said , he went on to show where the difficulty lay in bringing ont the trades of Londen and other large towns , it was the prejudice imbibed by them that foraied the greatest difficulty , that a portion ot them imagined ^ that the Chartistfl were designing to destroy the wealth of the country ; It was roch prejudices as these that
were required to be removed , and all that was wanted to complete that work was a zealous determination on the part of those who had a foil knowledge of tbe principles of the Charter , to point out the absurdity of their imaginations—to show them that the working commvraity were not likely to have a wish to destroy that which they had laboured so hard to create . The speaker then called upon ail present to do their utmost in this ^ ood cause , and sat down amidst warm applause . SSiort addresses were alterwards delivered by Messrs . Watkins , OsboHrne , Scott , Qurrell , McDonald , and Walt-jn , and the usual business of the association being gone through a vote of thanks was given to tbe Chairman , and tbe meeting adjourned until Saturday the 13 th insU Tan masons of London and tho tradea generally are respec . fully invited to attend at tbe Craven Head , Drury- ] ane , on Satnrday evening , August the 20 th , to take part in a discussion on the best means of protecting their labour .
China Walk , Lambeth . —On Sunday evening last , JMr . Wheeler lectured here , to the satisfaction of his audience . - METROPOLITAN DELEGATE MEETIS&—Mr . R 0 S 9 in the chair . Credentials were received from Mr . T . Beaden , for the Rook locality of Garpenters ; from Mr . Walktrdine , in conjunction with Messrs . Langwith and Jones , previously received from the united body of City Sbotmateis , meeting at the Star , ( Jilden Lane ; from Mr . KuiftLt , fox FitiabnTy , tali Messrs . Dowling and Dilibar , ftoai Cteliea . The minutes having been read and confirmed , the sam of 5 s . was received from the Star , Golden Lane , towards defraying the expences incurred at Dsptford ; from Lambeth , 5 s . ; fr « m Suiscra Town , 53 . j froai Camberwen > 3 s . ; and from the Gity of London , 7 a . GJ . The delegates then proceeded to tfce election of a Finance Committee . The balJot being taken , Messrs . Nagte , Cuffay , and Lncas were the snccessfiil caadid&tea . The sum of 2 s . 61 L was received
from Camberw * U , 2 a . 6 a . from the Britannia Coffee House , End is . from China Walk , towards the funds of tho Council . A Utter was rectfved from a member of the Female Chartist body , requesting tbe co-operatien and sdvisaof tiio meeting regarding tbe bringing out of tha females at the procession , when tbe memorial is presented . After some liltle discussion , Messrs . Wheeler , Dron , and Lucas were ballot ted for to draw up an address for the above -parpose . * Mr . Wheeler moved , and Mr . Luigwita seconded , tbe following resolution : — ' That this dolej&te meeting , while they have full confidence- in the integrity of the Execntive , and have no' objection to the calling of local delegate ceervags , yet , under present circumatancea they believe : hat the benefits to ba derived from the calling of three
conferences will not be comma ¦• surata with the expense incurred ; but they are of an opinion taat a National Ddlegate Meeting to be held in London , on the presentation of the Memorial , will be more conducive to the general welfare of the Chartist body . " Messrs . Dowling , C&xistopber , Knight , and other delegates , 8 up « ported the laotson , and stated their opinion that the conferences instead of healing acy differences which might exist , would only serve to widen them , and that no reasons h * d been assigaed to justify their being called . Mr . Cufiiy objected to any conference in Loddon or elsewhere . Mr . Cook moved es an amendment , " Thai London should not send a delegate to the conference to be held at Manchester ; " but he ultimately withdrew it After a long and animated discussion ,
in which some of the delegates expressed their opinion that the object of the conferences was to iiijare O'Connor and tha Star ; and that it was for them to determine whether they tfooM have the S ' ar for the organ cf ihe movement , and whether i * s Editor should bo ilr . HU 1 ; or -whether they wonld allow them to be sacrificed to patty and jealous motives , Mr . Cooper , of Manchester , having obtained leave briefly addressed the delegates , and disclaimed any intention , on the part of the Chart'Uts cf Manchester , to injure the Star , or its proprietor . In no port of Eaglaad was Feargus O'Connor and the Star more worshipped than in Lancashire Messrs . Sron , Wystt , anJ Lucas , spoke against the resolution , thinkinj that it was tantamonnt to a vote of no confidence in the Execntive . Mr . Wheeler replied arid showed that the reso . ution expressed confidence in the Executive , but disapproved of the Conferences . The 33 anche * ter Conference was well adapted as a local
deJenate meeting to forward the good cause for which it was assembled , tbe paying d ^ ie honour to a deceased patriot , ssd might be also conducive to the spread of Chartism ia the- Northern districts ; but he for one would never acknowledge its authority as n national conference nnless the majority cf the nation was there represented : and he was convinced , if this was not the case , the delegates to the Conference would have too much good sense to attempt the transaction of national business . Mr . W . then snowed that if a National Conference was necessary , London at the presentation of the Memorial , owiEg to the presence of the Scotch and other delegates , would afford great facilities for such a meeting ; the resolution was then carried . Mr . Campbcll who had declined taking any ^? art in the proceedings , britfiy addressed tbe delegates . Several notices of motious -= rere given , A subscription was entered into to enab ' e a poor Chartist to purchase a few tracts for sale in the cenntry , and ths meeting adjourned .
