We give , ia the Star of this dajyanaccooBi of four important public meetings : that of the Trades of London , the people of Manchester , the inhabitants of Paisley , and the Working Men ' s Association of Hull At each and every one of -which , the language of the several speakers was bold and to the question ; but a particular notice is due to the great meeting , held on Monday night , in the Joiners' Hall , Manchester , for the purpose of procuring a total repeal of
the Xew Poor Law . A particular notice is due to this meeting , in consequence of the mis-statement , contained in the Manchester Guardian , with reference to the paucity of numbers , and the increasing apathy of the people . The circumstance , " of all others / which gave us inost pleasure was , the fact of the meeting being held in the Joiner ' s Hall , a building eredt&Lby the carpenters of Manchester , which , with its capacions gallery , is capable of holding more than 5 , 1 ) 00
persons , and which , on Monday xiisht , would not have accommodated 600 more than were in it . Now for " Guardian " arithmetic . 600 from 5 , 000 and 1 , 000 remains . 1 , 000 , says the « Guardian , " and roA more , were present . The Cambridge boys had a curious method of discovering the name of the captain of a vessel . It was
this . They multiplied the number of guns by the number of sailors , and divided the marines into it , which gave the' name of the captain . Mayhap , approving of Cambridge ar ithmetical science , the " Guardian" multiplied the number of stamps by the number of advertisements and divided the Whigadvertising community into it , which gave the number of the meetinsr . il There was
nothing new , " says the Guardian . Odd , indeed , would it be , if a great grievance could exist , for more than four years , in this country , without having elicited all the popular condemnation , which its crying injustice merited . " There is notMn ? new under the Sun , " but as we were under the Moon on Monday night , we heard much novelty from the interesting details , communicated by the several delegates ; a ? to the good working of the "Boon /' in their respective districts . Had the " Guardian" before heard the able exposure by Mr . Elijah Dixon , of the " "
system oi pa vine rates , intended as a joint of the IC Xew ~ ' Poor Law Tail ? Had the ' •' Guardian'' before heard , at any Whigr meeting , such an -appeal as that of the Rev . Mr . STEPHENS ; adhering strictly to the question , while , in language sublime , and argument novel and convincine , he successfully maintained his position , that the Act is no law , but a violation of all law , iustiee , and humanitv .
Here we must be allowed one word upon .. _ a subject to which we mean to devote a commentary ; namely , the disowning of Mr . Stephens t > v the " Manchester Adrert ' wer " I upon the p ? rt of the whole body of Radicals . I This is rather an arbitrary edict for a I > TippOTt € -r of Universal Suffrage . But , I while we concede to the £ ; MtuuJte-sU-r ^ . 4 < L I T . nhtrT' and to nil- others , the rr / lit of

CAPITAL , CANADA , Al ? D AMERICA . The great subject of contemplation which now possesses , and ought to possess , an all-engrossing interest , for the toiling millions of these realms , is the operation of the damnable " coarser food" law , and its various ramifications : the most important of which is the transportation of the five Scotch Patriots , for endeavouring to uphold the right of labour . We repeat that this is the most important of all the numerous ^^^^^^^^^^^^
ramifications through which the agency of this infernal measure is extended . The full dominion of the monster , Capital , is perfect , o , nly in wretched Ireland , and even there it would-seem , by the late movements of its ally and supporter , not to sit quite so firmly on thfr throne as is accordant with its monstrous desires . Let but the scattered shreds of union , which still exist among detached portions of the people , be annihilated , and
-their doom is sealed . The mud cabin of the Irish peasant , with his half modicum of potatoes without salt , must then be the permanent condition of the enterprising hardy , and industrious English operative and Scotch artisan . And , indeed , we do not hesitate to say , that , if the people permit them to do this , with the experience they now have , and are every day having , oi -their heartlessness , they will amply deserve their fate .
= Xext to this all-important snbjeet , the interests , the feelings , and the sympathies of the people are most deeply involved in the straggle of our brave brethren of Canada to throw off the incubus of tyranny and despotism : That that struggle will be successful there can be no doubt , on the mind of any man who is not wilfully blind to the most glaring probabilities . That one amongthe many ruinous consequences , of the tenacious holding of its prey by the harpv ' s
iang , will be the involving of us in another bloody- and expensive war with America is quite certain , unless the people bestir themselves to prevent it . Outrages , such as those that have been reeentlv committed upon the lives and property of American citizens , are not tamely submitted to by the free-born people of a Republic . Murder and robbery and piracy are matters about which-there c : m be no joking : smd it will
certainly require a much greater measure of prudence-, and of hone-sty , tliun we < dve the imbeciles , who now hold the reins oi' Government , credit for , to ward off the natural consequences of such a violation of the hiw of nations . ' Tis in v : \ in they puint us to the diplomatic assurances of Washington , that-a-desire to preserve the amicableWia tionship of the two countries animates the American Cabinet . What is that desire
worth , supposing it really to exist , when we know that it cannot be enforced in any one State , without the consent of a majority of its people \ But what good reason have we to suppose that the American Government has any' such desire ? Who , with the least knowledge or experience of State matters , puts any faith in diplomatic assurances r The plaizi fret of the c ;; se is this . If it can be shev / n that Jonathan has an
interest in peace , then will he he peaceful , but not otherwise . Xow , oui-iinv one ? uj » - po > e ,. tharthe Americans , would not be triad that the power of the British Crown should not be-feU upon the "boundary line of their ternary r And c-n : i we ~ upp ;> se them blind 1 <> " so favourable an opporluuitv u ! removing ir ?
