———^ * DANIEL O'CONNELL AND HIS FOUR AGITATING CRUTCHES . No duty is so unprofitable to the individual , but at the same time so "beneficial to the state , as that which devolves upon a public censor . "When bodily punishment , privation , hardship , and every species of endurance , fails to produce an effect , the allsearching eye of the exploring multitude , will seize upon the one spot of disquietude , and gall the victim to repentance and remorse . Rome , in her days of palmy grandeur , owed more to her public censor
than to the dominion of her arms . Arraignment before the people was more dreaded than the charge of a thousand batallions . Yes , and even yet , although taken with loathing , does it never fail to operate . "Where is the man , though ever so callous or valiant in self-conceit , who will say , even to himself in his closet , " Public opinion , I despise you ? " No ; he is not to be found . But there is one man who has miscalculated upon the stabilitv of public opinion , and that man is Daniel O'Connell . He has taken for his out-door agitation prop *
four following important questions , namely , " The Universality of the Suffrage , " but , " above all , the Ballot to protect the honest voter in the exercise of his just right . " "Cheap Government , but above , and above all , Oh ! I give the people cheap food-, by repealing the unchristian tax upon bread . " "We give the words as they have" one thousand and one times fallen from hii lips : and now "briefly to illustrate the " practical' means by which our Mentor and modern Solon seeks to accomplish his four great objects . It will be remembered that Mr . O'Connell
commenced his speech at the recent London Anti-Slavery Meeting , thus : "I am a practical man , I have" always been a practical man , and I come here to ask , where is the value for twenty millions of our money ? " "We now come to ask where is the value ibr the Irish Rent , and where the proof of Mr . O'Cpnnell ' s practicability , upon his own foar chosen crutches . Firstly , with rezard to the t ; "Universality of the Suffrage . " Mr . Wak-XET s celebrated amendment at the
commencement of the session , was the only opporrunitv afforded for testing members upon that question ; and Mr . O'Coicsell voted against it ! Secondly , Mr . Gb . ote ' s motion upon the Ballot , should have been the signal for Mr . O'Cojtxeli / s ^ racticainliry , for the protection of the honest voter ; and yet he sneaks oat of the House , and never opeo ? , his lips upon the subject ! ThinUy , the Canadian question vras that which most minutelv
involved a consideration of cheap Government ; and yet , during the whole of the debate . Mr . O'CpxxELL absents himself , and is found occupied in a mean and sordid master ' s war against the poor trades of Dublin , the very men who raisedhim to his unen viab ] e - position ! Let U 3 repeat his pafelie pledge with regard to Canada . It was as follows : " I support the present administration as they do justice to Ireland , but should they attempt to coerce the brave Canadians , they shall have mv most bitter ,
unceasing opposition . ( Immense cheering . ) " But now ibr the " Above , and above all ; give the people cheap food , by taking the tax off bread . " Mr . O'Cosselx was absent and did not vote upon Mr . YrLLiBs ' s motion , nor did he use the slightest influence with one of his Tail ! So much for- this practical fill-belly anti-slavery patriot . In fact
he has not opened & lips in the House upon any one of the four questions . We shall not damage this plain sketch , with further comment , than that Mr . O'Coxhei / i / s " above all" reminds us ofthe placard of Mr . Perring ' s hat establishment in tie Strand . It is to the following , effect , Best Hat * 12 s . 6 d . ; Tery Best do . 15 s . ; Best of all do . 17 * . 6 d .

— ^ THE DORCHESTER LABOURERS . Englishmen , Irishmen , and Scotchmen , your brethren have returned from bondage , and that man is the best General , who turns his victory to the best account , * as the victory in this case , then , belongs wholly to yourselves , make the most of it . Your Scotch brethren , are about to relieve the Dorchester
labourers in their sufferings , and now briefly to state , how , those who have returned , mayprevent , ^ those who are marked ibr vengeance from suffering . The country generally and more especially the brave North , contributed those funds , by which the battle of the Dorchester men was fought , the country then has a right to make honourable use of them for the benefit of those now in affliction . The
plan , therefore , which I propose ; is—that George Loveless , and his little band of Patriots , be tespectfelly . requested to make a tour of England , commencing at Manchester , for the purpose of limply and pathetically informing us ofthe sufferings , which the Scotch Patriots are about to endure j there is nothing like hearing the facts from the lips of the sufferers and should they &il to arouse us -0 * sense of our duty , we all Reserve to be transposed . Stephens will , I have ao doubt , accompany the men through Lancashire ,
i ^ ad Oastleb and I will be ready to meet them on * he confines of oar county with a small guard of honour . If permitted , I will introduce them to our Scotch friends ^ who have been earnest in their l * n 8 e . Tfes course cannot Ml to produce the desired effect , and I respectfully submit the necessity ** etery Association , meeting and acting upon the ^ connnendation , by addressing the Dorchester men , lirongh the London Committee , We ought not to Wnsent to die time being fritted away . Not a moment should be lost in converting the liberty of
*** Englishmen into the salvation of the Scotchmen . « o man will deny the practicability of the plan , - * aa therefore we request that no mummery will be ? r * cticed , but that those men , released from bon" ¦ age , -will be at once allowed to start upon their ; « JT aiaSon . I merely make the suggestion , let ° ™ ers improve upon it , but something must be done . - Wfcurat thinking it necessary to say more to men J *» hare already go strongly expressed themselves a aronr of tie Patriots , I have-fee honour to "be , your faithful Servt ..
FEARGUS O'CONNOR . £ S . Iuhonld like to see the virtuous womea of ^ Baod leaa on in this project .
