Sir , —After Mr . John Murray ' s concise and practical note we had not intended joining in the controversy regarding the statements made by Mr .
Besant and :-others at the recent conference of the Incorporated Society of Authors , as we felt that letter met tlie point and said all that was necessary
for his fellow-craftsmen . But having read in the Tiroes of yesterday the admirable letter by Mr . George M . _ Smith _ j we cannot refrain ^__ from _ expressing j _ _ our
, - — ^ . jf- ^ — thanks to him for stating ^ so clearly and at such length the case of the publishers . On reading the remarks of Mr . Besant and some
of the other speakers at the meeting referred to , the principal feeling we experienced was one of surprise that such should be . assumed to be the attitude of
authors towards publishers . In the course of our experience we have so seldom had any evidence of the antagonism which Mr . Besant seems to assume
as existing between authors and publishers that we should fain hope that the impression conveyed must be very much exaggerated—and certainlyif instances
proving the contrary were wanting , , they could easily be found in the published memoirs of many authors _ -- — of -- distinction - - which furnish ample proof
of ~ T ^ the friendly relations ^ , and implicit ^^ confidence —^ ^ — ^^ W ~ that — — have existed between them and their publishers . Indeed , we fear it is the less desirable class of
authors "who , through easily understood circumstances , necessarily gravitate downwards to the less desirable class Of publishers , of whom , we fear , it
would be idle to deny the existence . That it should ever be supposed that a publisher ' s accounts were not open to the inspection of his clients , or that
vouchers could not be furnished if desired , seems to us scarcely necessary to be insisted on when we had not imagined it could be doubtedand we are suro
