tions of balls and fetes and public events of all kinds , and from beginning to end has not
a dull page in it . The sketches of character , too , are strikingly lifelike , and the anecdotes are generally new and always amusing . For
instance , we are told of Plon-Plbn , on an break Arctic of cruise the , Franco receiving -German the news War of and the being
outasked by the commander of the , Imperial yacht if His Highness wished the course of the vessel to be altered and in what direction
she was _^ to be steered , receiving the laconic reply , ' A Charenton , ' a free English rendering
of which answer would be , ' To Colney Hatch . ' It seems that the ' Life of Goethe , ' which
the New Goethe Society proposes to publish , is to be the work of several hands . It will not only relate the events in Goethe ' s lifebut
will consider the great writer under various , aspects as poet , statesman , scientific
investigator , & c . & c ., and each aspect will be treated by a specialist . It is said that the outline of the scheme has been sketched by the Grand
Duchess of Weimar herself , who has invited the veteran historian Leopold von Ranke to write a ' Tableau Historique' descriptive of
Goethe ' s times as an introduction , to the work . It seems , however , that the series of Goethe
publications will open with ' Madame Goethe ' s Letters to the Duchess Anna Amelia of Weimar' ( ' Brief e der Frau Rath Goethe an die
Herzogin Anna Amalia von Weimar' ) . The Grand Duchess has already handed over the Goethe archives in Weimar to the guardianship
of the newly appointed Director , Professor Erich Schmidt , although the Director will not finally leave Vienna for Weimar until the
autumn .
