Jtthere Is No Evident Reason Why The Boo...
_JTTHERE is no evident reason why the Book-J- sellers' Provident Institution should not
in every respect be in as healthy a condition as the best of similar organisations . It enjoys
the patronage of Her Majesty the Queen , and shows in its list of office-bearers many of the
most familiar names associated with different branches of the book trade . There is not the
slightest doubt , however , that the Institution is far from being what it ought to be . It does
not get a quarter of the support that it ought to get from the general body of the trade .
Nowadays every profession and nearly every mercantile and industrial body supports an
institution of a similar nature . Some of these , encouraged by spirited support , have taken a
high position among benevolent organisations . To make such institutions successful , nothing
is required so much as union . Without union the best of them must decay . What
we would like to see in connection with the Booksellers' Provident Institution is a
widespread movement among all classes of the booksellers themselves to give' a practical
support to the society with which they are identified , and which is always performing
laudable work amongst the unfortunate of their own trade . The advantages which
might accrue to themselves is a matter in itself worthy of consideration . They are
relieved in cases of sickness , want of employment , or other misfortune . They are
permanently supported when incapacitated by age or infirmity . Orphan children are
provided for up to the age of fifteen years . Under all these circumstances a good deal
must necessarily depend upon outward support , as the actual subscriptions of members
are not adequate to secure the advantages offered to members . The directors have
therefore recommended that some other means should be adopted to increase the income , and
we can only hope that their endeavours will meet with success . We extract from the
Report for 1884 the following particulars : — - ' The income of the Institution during 1884
arising from subscriptions , donations , and the interest on the capital invested , including a
legacy of £ 100 by the late Mr . Henry G . Bohn , and a grant of £ 160 from the
Booksellers' Provident Retreat , has amounted to £ 1 , 622 1 Th . is 0 s . amount 2 d . includes a donation ( the
second ) of £ 20 from Her Majesty the Queen , Patroness of the Institution .
' The disbursements have been as follows : — In relief , temporary and permanent , granted
to 27 members and 52 widows of members , £ 1 , 455 . 10 s . ; and £ 71 . 16 a . 6 cL for the salary TT . ' ¦ _¦ " . ' ¦ . " ¦ "" ii i in ' « _'" _' , ' ' . '' i ' ii _mm-m-qm ii _—m— -m _^ mmmm _^^ mmm _** _mmmimmm _**

Institution and its affiliated Retreat , which he jl visited within a few days of his death . His I
memory will long be cherished by the inmates I of the Retreatas well as by the members of I
the board , where , his presence was ever wel- I come . The : house furnished by him as a I
sanatorium will remain a lasting memorial of jl his generosity . I
' The decease of Mr . Henry George Bohn , jl another of the earliest members and con- I
tributors to the funds of the Institution , has I also to be recorded . These gentlemen evinced II
