TO JSE JPJJJBT ^ ZSirEI > O 2 V 15 tlt OCTOBER- I Foolscap 4 to . 832 pp . cloth ., red edges , 10 s . 6 d . ; or half-morocco , 15 s . A CONCISE DICTIONARY OF THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE . LITERARY , .-SCIENTIFIC , ETYMOLOGICAL , & PRONOUNCING . By CHARLES AIOTAlsTDALE , M . A ., X . L . D ., Editor of * Ogilvies Imperial Dictionary' { New Edition ) . r 11 HE present Dictionary is based on the New Edition of the Imperial TticMovtary , JL which has been so favourably received by the public and the press . It is intended to meet the wants of all who wish to provide themselves with an English Dictionary handy in size and moderate in price , rich in its vocabulary , concise yet not too meagre in its definitions and explanations , fresh and accurate in its information , and forming in all respects a useful and trustworthy work of reference for modern readers . The name of Concise Dictionary properly applies to this work , inasmuch as it has been compiled on the principle of compressing a great quantity of matter into a very moderate compass , and because space has been economised as much as possible , more especially by the method of grouping together into one paragraph words that are closely akin in origin , form , and meaning . The Vocabulary it contains is very ample , both in simple words and in compounds , in words pertaining to literature strictly so called , and in those pertaining to Science , technology , and the arts . One of its chief aims is to explain clearly and accurately all the more important modem terms pertaining to these subjects , and to the common topics of the time , since it is in regard to these terms that the great majority of readers most frequently consult their dictionary . The definitions and explanations will be found sufficiently full and clear for the needs of most inquirers . Many terms are so fully dealt with , that the information given in regard to them may be justly characterised as encyclopedic , A large number of phrases and verbal aggregates that require to be explained as a whole are given , so that this work , among its other features , possesses that of a phraseological dictionary . To the distinctive meaning and usage of Synonyms attention is drawn throughout the book ; while hints on grammatical constructions , incorrect expressions , & c ^ are also given . ~ On the etymology such an amount of care and pains has been , bestowed as the great importance of the subject demands , the works of the most recent investigators having been consulted and advantage taken of their labours * . The correct pronunciation of the words is shown on an exceedingly simpl © system , the key-words for the different sounds being given at the foot of each page . Pronouncing lists of ancient and modern biographical and geographical names , and lists of foreign words and phrases , abbreviations , & c , are given , by way of appendix . ;•• . % * JProsjtcctusei , tvith Speclinen , JPages , supplied , to the Trade I .-= 1- on , application * I I oudon : BfrACKIE & SPIT , 49 and 50 Old Bailoy .
