Concentration is power , and it may be that it is not solely owing to lack of time to read long
works the public demand short ones . There may be a healthy instinct at work as well .

The Progress Of The International Copy-
The progress of the International
Copyright measure is slow , but there is evidence from time to time that it is steady . On
another page we give the report of a meeting of printers recently held in Boston , which
declared in favour of copyright with foreign countries . Hitherto the stock argument
against the Bill has been that if it became law the price of books would go up in America .
The fallacy of this argument , however , is becoming clearer and clearer . As the principal
speaker at the meeting pointed out , ' the ultimate tendency of copyright , domestic or
international , will be to make books cheaper , It will favour the printing of two or more
editions of many popular books to meet the purse of every class of buyers . Domestic
copyright has not made popular books dearer in Germany and France , where good books
are as cheap as they are here . That international copyright will prevent the diffusion
of knowledge by limiting the printing of books is a proposition entirely untenable . ' Entirely .
It is satisfactory to find that the stale plea of the opponents of the Bill is at last being
disposed of . . * -j ^ — —
