Rithe International Exhibition O^ Fine P...
riTHE International Exhibition o ^ Fine Print-J- ing , which was recently held at Stationers '
I Hall , seems likely to bring about , a new and much-needed departure in the history of the
trade to which Oaxton belonged ; . In spite of the somewhat angry comments with which it
has been received in certain quarters , the Lord Mayor ' s speech on that occasion was sensible ,
1 man criticism ly , and which practical it contained , and the lay sting in ^ ts of truth the 1 .
! Nothing can possibly be gained by shutting I our eyes to the fact that English craftsmen
have allowed themselves to be left behind , if not as regards ordinary typography , at
all events in the development of the more artistic and ornamental branches of the
art of printing . One circumstance which the Lord Mayor mentioned , though trivial
j in itself , is enough to show the need of immediate and concerted action ; the type
of the invitation card to the Exhibition was entirely American , with the exception i
of the initial letter which had been borrowed , so to speak , for the occasion from Germany .
No one could examine the small but ' interesting collection of specimens at
Stationers' Hall of fine job work , ornamental arid decorative printing of all kinds ,
delicate woodcuts , and * process' engravings in colour and monochrome , without at once
perceiving that English typefounders and printers have still much to learn from their
American and Continental rivals . We are quite willing to admit that it is just possible !
that English printers could turn out better work than that by which they were
represen ted at Stationers ' Hallbut even V if this is I , 1
I granted , the marked superiority in beauty of
design as well as ii \ technical ' ? finish . * of - the relief
printing of Germany and Austria remains a matter which no sensible man will care ta dispute .
We are glad , therefore , to" learn that it is proposed to fornv a loan collection f & im the
Exhibition ^ ust closed $ which will be available to printers in all the large towns of the
kingdom . Fine workmanship of this kind deserves to be seen and studied by all who are engaged
in the trade , and we only regret that no fuller opportunity was given to the sixty thousand
printers of London to inspect so unique a ^ collection . Now , however , that a movement
has been made in the direction of progress , other and still more representative exhibitions
will doubtless be demanded in the interests of the tra ^ ie .
The Exhibition at Stationers' Hall owes iu its o orig vsxigx in & x to uu the m . j . t 7 tJBritish - « - * xxpiou T j- ypograpHia . y j t tKf ^ Ju ai ^ jJLt . lxJb , f a a > t wouv rade
association established in "the provinces in 1887 , and which already has branches in
Birmingham , Manchester , Bradford , Glasgow , and other large towns . The Association seeks
to give letterpress printers a more exalted idea of the possibilities of their artas well
as to help them in practical ways to , greater efficiency V in their calling % -J . It seeks to form
libraries of technical works , specimens of printing & cl , for the use of its members ;
and . it has already established courses <> f technical instruction . It also proposes 4 h + to
exam raise in the ations status , and of the grant workmen ing certificates by instituting m to
those who acquit themselves creditably in typography . Upwards of a tliousaml
members have enrolled themselves in the ranks of the JBritish Typograpihiaand there
, is men every t is destined reason rap to idl believe y to spread that . the We move notice
that one- object of the Association is to I
