Notwithstanding the difficulties which surround the satisfactory accomplishment of a narrative historically placed , the present author has no reason to question her powers in that direction . The scenes of the story are placed mostly in the city of Exeter . Hugh and his father have several adventures , and ultimately a ship in which they have sailed is wrecked on the coast of Devon .
