Ifab ^^ S ^ ^ l WITHSTANDING the lengthened prevalence of trade depression and the lt @ l It ill Eg occurrence of the General Election , the publishers of the country have this

( Griffith , Farran , & Co . ); the ' Royal River' ( Cassell & Co . ) , an entertaining work on the Thames from source to sea , magnificently produced in the finest style of book art and work ;
the ' Journal kept by Dick Doyle in the year 1840 ' ( Smith , Elder , & Co . ) is a smaller work , but but its its store store of oi amusement amusement ana and interest interest , , coupiea coupled witn with the me handsome nanasome way way it it has lias been been produced produced

mention the beautiful volume ' The Last Leaf ( Sampson Low & Co . ) , a poem by Oliver Wendell Holmes , which has been issued in a form that is at once unique and brilliant .
Several important books not connected especially with the Yule-tide have been kept back on account of the Elections , although General Grant ' s Memoirs have attracted universal
attention even amidst the heat of the turmoil . We may now , however , look forward to the appearance of Lord Tennyson's ' Tiresias ; ' Mr . Ruskin's ' On the Old Road ; ' Longfellow ' s
Biography , by his brother ; a correspondence between Carlyle and Goethe , and another I between Carlyle and Emerson . Each and all of these books are bound to be of more than
ordinary interest . But returning to the subject of Christmas Books , we note with satisfaction that the output of
works designed for the people—for children especially—is maintained with unflagging energy . Those who thoughtfully examine the present number of the Publishers' Circular cannot fail
i > o be struck with the amount of literary labour , as well as the commercial and industrial activity and enterprise , which its teeming pages represent .
With regard to presentation volumes , a feature which is very prominent , and is yearly becoming in ore prominent , is the favour with which the annual volumes of periodicals are
received . Publishers of such works now vie with each other in producing the volumes with all the advantages that is in their power to bestow in connection with literary matter ,
illustrationsand external adornment . The moderate j > rice of some of these volumes must be a , cause of wonder to many purchasers .
