      An amazing SHILLING'S WORTH , 'IF I COULD HAVE BUT ONE "WORK FOR A PUBLIC LIBRARY , ' said a distinguished American , Chakles Fbancis Adams , in a public address , ' I would select Harper ' s Magazine It is always varied , always good , always improving , and always reflecting with the utmost skill the average popular demand . ' Hamper ' s is , in fact , planned to be welcomed in every home , and to interest every member of the home circle , avoiding everything sectarian , partisan , sensational , or otherwise objectionable , yet varied and vigorous in contents , and full of interest and information . Its literary character , and the artistic excellence of its lavish illustrations , make it equally appreciated in literary and art circles . Harper ' s Magazine aims to be the favourite Monthly Periodical of that wide English nation , which includes alike England , America , and the Colonies , peculiarly a nation of homes and of readers . It is only by its success in thus commanding an unprecedented circulation that it is enabled to give to each reader every month a shilling's-worth which costs a thousand pounds or more to produce .
