Chaiiges in the books required for the national system of elementary education have fortunately
not been so numerous lately as they were some years ago . Then no . one knew what a day might
bringp forth , and it is not a figure of speech to eay that fortunes were made and fortunes lost in the
business of publishing . The ill winds blew well for some persons . Perhaps a book which had been

But it is peculiarly the case with educational publishing , now that school-books generally are of fairly
equal merit . Very different was the state of affairs some ten or a dozen years ago , when books good
and bad , from all points of view , appeared almost alternately . On previous occasions we have spoken (
of the great and good work which has been done by competition in the production of school-books .
In accordance with ? the usual custom in our educational numbers , we now give a brief summary
of the chief school-books at present in use throughout the country . Messrs . Asher & Co . —The principal items in
Messrs . Asher ' s announcements are the ' Model Books of Foreign and Commercial Correspondence ' and the ' International Reading Books for Schools /
Among the general books , we notice Mr . A . S . Murray ' s comprehensive ' Manual of Mythology . ' , [ Vide page 84 .
