"Dooksellers Will Hate* \Ample Cause For...
"DOOKSELLERS will haTe * \ ample cause for J- * dissatisfaction should any increase of
railway rates take place under the provisions of the Railway and Canal Traffic Act . To 1
raise the cost of transit twenty-five per cent , would be simply ruinous to country
booksellers , whose profits are at best not to be compared with those accruing to the enterprise
of other trades . True it is that their transactions are small ; but they are frequent and
regular . Persons engaged in other businesses may haTe larger consignments occasionally .
Scarcely a day passes , however , when a bookseller in the country does not receive a small
parcel of goods , and it seems exceptionally hard that he should be burdened with an
additional twenty-five per cent , far the cost of conveyance .
Everything in the economics of public convenience points to the desirability of
reduction in terms for the conveyance by rail of essential commodities . At a very early
period this was recognised by the concessions granted in connection with newspapers . Than
the book traffic , no business is conducted with less responsibility , less trouble , or less risk to
the railway J . companies V * ; and in association ' with the periodical and newspaper transit we may
safel y affirm that it is among * ¦ *• the most profit- able of all .
We hope that booksellers throughout the whole country will strongly resent the
imposition of any increase in this matter . It would not only be a drain on their purses , bu * t an
absolute tax on the dissemination of knowledge . The new classification of rates , according to ¦¦
Sir Michael Hicka-Beach , cannot come into force until it has been sanctioned by the
Board of Trade and by Parliament . Booksellers are an influential and widely r-distributed
body of traders , and it ia to be hoped that they will exerciae the power * at their command and
—* ~ at once Combine . to object to this new schedule
of rates .
