We Publish To-Day Some Facts Concerning ...
account for every man , woman , and child in the country amounts broadly to £ 4 . On the other
hand , we are economical in certain directions , as , for instance , in imported books .
Literature from abroad , even if we include in that term maps and charts , does not cost us more
than a quarter of a million . Less than threehalfpence a head , therefore , as Mr . Dymes in
his article on ' The National : Import of Books ' points out , represents the sum winch the
British public spend in the importation of food for the mind , whilst eig ¦ bb- ^ ' hty -w shillings V ^ a
head is the amount annually disbursed in bring ¦ ing into the country food for the body .
—— ^ -av The contrast is certainly startling , and may well supply moralists , in the trade and beyond
it , with ' food for reflection . ' We need scarcely remind the readers of the
Publishers' Cibcuxar , however , that imported books constitute , after all , but a microscopic
proportion of the actual supply ; for , as a matter of fact , year by year the number
of books published in the United Kingdomsteadily advances .
The Board of Trade Returns are of necessity summed up in terse , not to say laconic ¦ ,
English . In fact , in making up the meagre statistics to 5 which vre have refex * red , weight
and and value value are are the the only onlv considerations ^ onsirle rar , i nn « which wTn r » Ti appear to impress the official mind . It is of course neither the weight of the arguments
nor the value of the conclusions , but merely the ability to turn the scale in the avoirdupois
sense of the term , and the cost of the volumes in the current coin of the realm . Modest as
our national bill for the importation of literature is , there is no stagnation in that
branch of the book market . Indeed , in four 11 years there has been an increase of one-third
in quantity ; and , moreover , taking the same period , there has been a gradual lessening of
the cost of production , which is equal to a reduction in price of seventeen per cent .
Such facts are not merely significant in themselves , but are calculated to awaken hopeful
¦ Mm anticipations for coming years .
