well-known volumes by Dean Champneys , and many of the publications ___ . of the Church
Missionary Society . He was also one of th § publishers of the Rev . Thomas Scott ' s *
Commentary on the Holy Scriptures . ' In the production of his books , he invariably mrtook a
great pride in seeing that they came before the public in the best possible styleand of
many of them it may be said that in taste , and elegance they surpassed anything of the kind
then issued . To the public Mr . Seeley was well known
as an author , while his friends were aware how largely he contributed to many of the
chief newspapers and periodicals of the day . His book * Essays on the Church' by a Layman
went through many editions , its object being to , show that ' Church Establishments were in
accordance with Scripture , and that the English Church was chargeable with no such faults as
would make her an exception to the general rule , or justify v p ^ secession from her _ .. commit ___ ___ — -

Champneys . With the late Earl of Shaftesbury he had frequent intercourse , and exerted
himself largely in support of his Factory Bills . He was greatly interested in ¦ politics ,
and worked hard mmg on the « p Conservative side in many contested — ______ elections . As a liveryman -- _ of
the City of London he was active also in municipal politicsand bore a prominent part
, in the struggle by which Alderman Harmer was excluded from the office of Lord Mayor ,
and in other civic controversies . He was a member of the Court of Lieutenancy of the
City of London , and for a short time of the Metropolitan Board of Works /
Four sons and six daughters survive him and ! mourn Ms loss . Professor Seeley , of
Cambridge , is his third son .
