Ithin The Lastiew Days Two Lady Writers ...
ITHIN the lastiew days two lady writers Wvery familiar to English readers have
passed to the majority . Although they were utterly dissimilar in their rnodes of thought ,
! Lady Brassey ajid Mrs . Craik represented characteristic classes of English feminine
bri genius ght . viva One city was ; the adventurous other c ^ uiet , full and of retiring life and ,
fond of sylvan rusticity and the simple scenes of homely circles . Among the latter writer ' s
creations a great character towers head and shoulders above the heroes of contemporary ^¦ a ^ T
fiction ' John . Halifax ' Adam , ' and Bede 'John ' is the Halifa onl x y rival will for of
many years remain a favourite in English homes . Affection , too , will linger long with
the memory of the great writer of the story . Lady Brassey ' s works are , of course , more
practical and robust . They contain little that is original ; but are sparkling descriptions of
something more than holiday experiences in foreign climes . We cannot remember the name
of any writer of holiday travels who sprang more rapidly into fame . And that this fame
was deserved is fully proved by the continued popularity of Lady Brassey ' s books . It was
understood that the voyage which Lord and I Lady Brassey recentl y undertook mig **** ht form
the subject of a new work destined to please her ladyship's numerous readers ; and
doubtless the notes of the earlier portion of the journey which has been saddened by a
calamity so sudden and sorrowful will in time appear .
The death of these authors has silenced ¦ two distinguished workers in the fields of
literature , adventure , and philanthropy . Opposite in nature and aims , their work ap
JkA A r pealed to special classes—the old school and the new—and it would be difficult to point to
more distinctive examples of lady writers who flironted or encourasred ~ - ~ rmblic taate . jfVWV ¦ i ¦ ¦ »¦ »» ~ - —» ~
