i From Messrs . Bickers & Son . —' Sacred and ; Shakesperian Affinities , ' by Charles Alfred
Swinburne . Mr . Swinburne ' s purpose is to set out in detail Shakespeare's indebtedness to the Bible 7 or more correctl — ___^ yto __ ' the _ _ sacred poems
, - - , j ^ of the Psalmists' There can be no question whatever that most of the great poets of the worldespecially the great modern poetsowe
much , of their inspiration to Holy , Writ . Shakespeare in particular was fond of drawing on the sacred treasuries of thought and poetic
imagery , and Mr . Swinburne has selected from the writings of the great poet and philosopher * passages containing ideas and illustrations
more or less apposite to , and not unworthy to be placed side by side with , extracts from the Psalms themselves . ' Though some of the
extracts seem to us to have only a fanciful appositeness , in the main they show how vast was Shakespx eare's debt to the sweet — singers oof
Israel . The volume is the result of long and loving study , and nmy be read with advantage by all who take an interest in tracing the
influence of one literature upon another . From Messrs . W . B . Clive & Co . —* A History /• of England 1685-1801 ' by A . J . EvansM . A .
and C . S . , Fearenside , , M . A . ( The Tutorial , , Series . ) In this book the story of the Eighteenth Century is told in a form at once
condensed and readable . Both the constitutional and international history are dealt with , and in an introductory chapter a summary of
English history is given down to the j r ear 1685 , and for the sake of greater clearness and siinplicit } ' separate appendices on Ireland and
India are added . Students will find the work eminently useful . From Messrs . Dean & Son . — ' Scenes through
the Battle Smoke , ' by the Rev . Arthur Male . Illustrated by Sidney Paget . Mr . Male , who was army chaplain in the Afghan and Egyptian

on which there might be two opinions , but both were prominent at a critical time in the history of the United Statesand their ' Lives '
cannot fail to be of more or , less interest to the people of this country . Both were men of talent , perhaps it might even be acknowledged
that Phillips was a man of genius . John Bright said that he was ' perhaps the greatest orator ' of his time , and Mr . Martyn says he was the
greatest orator of all time . In this estimate Mr . Martyn appears to us to be drawing the long bow . There is no doubt whatever that
