THE original edition of Fairbairn ' s Book of Crests was published in 1859 , and at once took its place as the Standard Work on Crests in this country . No thoroughly revised edition has been published since that date . For perfect workmanship in the drawing and engraving of the plates , and the extent and completeness of its Index of names with blazonings , it is still unequalled by any Heraldic Work published . For the NEW EDITION Several Hundred new Crests will be engraved , and the Index of British surnames will be thoroughly revised and greatty enlarged . Searches will be undertaken at the Heralds' College , the Lyon Office , Ulster College , and the British Museum ; sketches of crests not already appearing will be submitted to those entitled to bear them ; a very large collection of bookplates and other material will be put under contribution ; communications from Crest-holders will be advertised for ; and an extensive system of correspondence will be carried on with the Nobility and Gentry , and others able to supply information . Indeed no trouble or expense will be spared to secure a complete revision of the work up to the present date . With a view to add further to the comprehensiveness of the Work a , large number of pkivatig KNTRIKB will be made , which mill give , besides the usual entry of the family swrname , a SPECIFIC entry of the full name , designation , and address , with the correct reference to tlie engraving of the crest . In order to limit the number of such entries , they will be confined to those ? vho subsoribe to tlie worlt prior to publication . The Work will be issued at ThrOfl Ghli & OaO ITot to Subscribers prior to publication .
