Pilgrim ' 8 Progres 8 t AfiRt days and death / From Messrs . Morgan & Scott . —' China ' s Millions / edited by J . Hudson Taylor * This is the
volume for 1879 of what is apparently a monthly magazine , issued with the object of creating an interest in Christian Missions on the great
continent . Details of work done and descriptive sketches of the country and people form the contents of the volumewhich is freely illustrated and
attractively bound . , From Messrs James Nisbet & Co . — 'The Gospel "W all : or , Lessons from Neheniiah , ' by W . P .
Lockhart . The author of this work , who dates from Toxteth Tabernacle , Liverpool , does not present it as a thorough exposition of the Book
of Nehemiah , but as ' a humble attempt to gather up some simple lessons , especially for Christian workersfrom a portion of God ' s Holy Word
which is , often overlooked . A point in the typography of the volume deserves special mention . The extracts from the text of the eacred book are
piinted in special type , and thus the use of the book by students or Sunday-school teachers , to whom it may be recommended , will be materially
facilitated . The commentary is practical and devotional rather than critical , and the lessons drawn from the various incidents described by
the prophet are such as will be found applicable to the majority of congregations . Much sterling sens © is to be found in many fof the author ' s
reflections , as for instance in his thoughts on the statement , that not only the chief of the fathers gave ^^ n « —— . - - — - liberall - - ~ — « y m to — - ^ the -v ^ h ^— cost ~^ ^^ ^ v ^ of - *^ ^ m the v ^^ h ^ «^ work v v ^^ ^ ^ b ^^ , h but |«^ w « p ^ r that ^ p «* •« w ^^

the many . Both Churches and other Christian societies have become powerless because the small contributions of the poor have been slighted , while
court has been paid to the rich whose donations were large . All should be encouraged to contribute so far as they are able . Workerstooshould

lated from the German by Emily Hill . Mr . Reeves has , in this volume , added a wo * k ef genuine interest to his now numerous stock of
0 musical literature , and as Beethoven still holds . his own even among those who worship at the altar of the music of the future , Dr . Pohl is
likely to find as many readers in England as in Germany . The plan on which the work is based is to givein the words of his contemporaries
