PLAN OF THE WORK . This School Text-Book has been prepared in the hope tbat Pupils may be encouraged to read up Book-work for themselves ; and that Tutors may find the necessity for oral instruction lessened to a certain extent . Book-work has , therefore , been , given in a simple form and in as few words as seem consistent with proper explanations . References are given , with Questions set as Miscellaneous Exercises , that reasons for results may be again and again considered . OPINIONS OP THE PRESS-* We cannot do better than recommend this admirable work by an able and experienced teacher of mathematics . Besides a very careful explanation at the head of each section , the author has adopted the admirable plan of giving references to these explanations , with the questions set as miscellaneous exercises . j £ or Practice and Stocks the unitary method , as well an that ordinarily in use , has been given . The examples for working out are numerous and varied , and will enable any person of average mental ability to obtain for himself a considerable acquaintance with this useful but troublesome branch of learning . We welcome the book as a valuable addition to the many works on the subject already published/—Oxford Chroniclk . 1 peculiarity of this arithmetic is that * pupils are in working its sums required to read and think for themselves ; therefore its rules are given in a very simple form and as ecncise as possible . The examples are so classified and arranged that by repetition a thorough knowledge of each rule is gained ; and still further to facilitate work without a tutor ' s help , explanatory book-work is given with questions set as miscellaneous exercise .
