Since our last number appeared we have observed that the duty charged on Christmas cards and artistic calendars imported into Victoria has been abolished . This decision is to be commended . According to the Melbourne-Daily Telegraphy two experts prepared a report on both sides . , The report contained opinions as to what kinds of cards could be brought under the denomination of * works of art / and what under that of ' manufactured stationery . ' The Law Department gave a verdict that the cards could scarcely be considered as * manufactured stationery , ' hence tfee decision that no duty shall be charged , but that all calendars and cards containing advertisements shall be subject to the usual impost . o *
Fob Some Time Past The Authorities At Sc...
FOB some time past the authorities at Scotland Yard have been showing more than ordinary vigilance in the direction of suppressing the traffic in indecent literature . In our last issue a correspondent mentioned a case of what appeared to be over-zeal on the part of the powers . The fact is , that the ramifications of this trade are so extensive , and the questions connected with it so intricate , that mistakes are bound to occur on the part of those who undertake its legal suppression . The Scotland Yard authorities are determined not only to continue their work in this direction , but we believe that additional steps may be taken . Setting aside the trash which tickles the morbid fancies of the dwellers in Slumdom , one might well ask : What , in a higher sense , constitutes an indecent book ? Broadly speaking , such a work may be stigmatised as a book j prepared ostensibly for the corruption of the ! mind . Different people , however , have different views . Should the decision of this question be left to the magistrates , some of them might say the work under their notice was grossly indecent , whilst others might declare that during boyhood they had read worse things in Shakespeare . This old conflict between Mrs . Grundy and literary libertinism can hardly present new features . Nevertheless it certainly would be a new feature if police censorship were extended to the best booksellers' shops and to auction rooms , a proceeding which is by no means improbable should information be ¦ ~ Q fo - - . .... . ¦ . , ' . 1 . ¦ -.. . - — -
lodged . As to the character of the books which might come under the ban , we cannot offer a surmise ; bi ^ t we are credibly informed that a certain translation which was with difficulty brought before the world not long since , and has now gained not a little notoriety , would be immediately seized if brought under the notice of the authorities .
