THE WEEK .
Out Of The Twelve Members Who Were Pledg...
Out of the twelve members who were pledged to vote against Mr . Gladstone ' Land Bill , only one went over to the enemya man of no weight , in fact , a mere representative of Cork . These members are known in the House as the twelve Apostles . I It would be very rude to say who is known as the Judas of the party . We are sure that Mr . Downing will agree with us , at any rate , on this point !
Mr. Lowe, It Is Said, Will Have A Surplu...
Mr . Lowe , it is said , will have a surplus of ^ 4 , 000 ; but as this surplus has only been obtained by spoiling , one class for the advantage of another , there are some people who declare that the Right Hon . Gentleman should make restitutionthat he should own himse , for once in the way , in the wrong . From our canny Chancellor ' s antecedents we fear that , although close upon the hour of the " budget , " he will still refuse to budg £ /
/ A Poor Cabman Drove Into The Grand Jun...
/ A poor cabman drove into the Grand Junction Canal the other day and was drowned . It is stated that this is the fifth casualty of the kind that has occurred at this spot ( near the toll-bridge between the Harrow road and Kensal New Town ) within the last two years . Nothing will be done , of course , until some " highly respectable " person loses his life , and then the place will be railed off . At present the authorities seem to consider the canal the proper place for the canaille J
A Story Comes To Us From Malta That Afte...
A story comes to us from Malta that after permission had been given to " an officer of Lieutenant's rank" to embark his wife and sister on board the JIi ?? ialaya , the commander of that distinguished troop-ship ordered the whole party to quit the vessel , calling a small fishing-boat alongside to facilitate their departure . Under a hot sun , and after a long pull , the officer and ladies reached the Custom House . If this little story is true , the Himalaya should change its name from Him-a-laya to Him-a-cad , in honour of its captain !

At Trieste there was a riot the other da / . The Italian Consul General gave a ball in aid of the distressed Italians in that city . This entertainment was seized by certain Italians as 111 opportunity for publicly insulting Austria . No one will be
