narrow y strip of flat flagstone running down the , centre , the rest being merely paved with the same material as the carriage way ,
while the depth of the ditch-like gutters at the side , necessitates their being bridged across with planks before the pnrte-cocheres and
at every street corner , in order to allow the gulf to be passed over . . Hereas at Hamburghunderground establishments form a
striking , feature , and are mostl , y devoted to the sale of eatable and drinkable commodities , wine and beer cellars , literally such and
not merely in name , alternating- with depots , equally cellular , for comestibles and " delicatess-waaren" in the shape of raw ham and
sausages , noodle soup , ( a variation , of vermicelli , ) rice-milk , & c . & call in readiness , according to announcement , for " hot or cold

inferior streets , yet even in the most respectable thoroughfares , amid the liht and regularity of the rectangular _ITriedrich-stadt ,
the lower reg g ions , equally devoted to Ceres and Bacchus and whatever other divinity may preside over porcine preparations , are still
sunk to a level not easy of access , and wrapped in repulsive _obscu-. rity yet the latter articlesespeciallyare so almost _imiversally
banished ; to these abodes of , gloom , that , a lady desiring to take home with her from Berlin a " real German sausage , " might walk
for miles before finding a shop she would dare to enter in order to make such a purchase , though tantalised by the sight of the
national dainty , in more or less tempting condition , exposed in one , at least , of every dozen houses she might pass . In these dark
domains , in pleasure gardens , at railway stations , and wherever else the world may be seen refreshing itself , King Beer seems to
reign paramount over every other kind of fluid ; all classes being suited by different kinds and qualities of the beverage , culminating
in the delicate _speciality of Berlin , most meet for ladies' lips , Weissbier , that light ethereal champagne of malt , the very poetry of
beer . Although inferior trades are so generally filtered through to a
lower stratum , the ground-floor shops are by no means generally of very imposing appearance , falling far below those of _London or
Paris , both as regards the display of goods , which are mostly ticketed abound , and where the engravings places in which after they Eng are lish disp artists layed . Landseer Print shops and
Ansdell , being at the moment quite in the ascendant , , usually occupy a large share of the while at the booksellers ' , French ,
