the medicinal contributions from the Colonies to the International Exhibition , embodying the results at present ascertained , of an
inquiry undertaken at the suggestion of Miss Burdett Coutts . Mr . Hunter says in his preface : — " To the truly philanthropic and
enlightened mind of Miss Burdett Coutts did it occur that these foreign substances , medicines and drugs , ought to be turned to
some account . She was sanguine in the belief that some—few , perhaps—valuable additions might be made to our present
Pharmacopoei , a ; that , as good might accrue by examining these medicinesthe op _23 ortunity should not be lost of testing these foreign
, remedies brought to our hands . And again : —" Much of the good that has been done , in the International Exhibition , for the
colonies , as regards their medical productions and their contributions of a dietetic nature , would never have been done at all , but
