Missionaries Starved On The Rocks Of Pat...
covered the bodies and the journals . He has written a full account thereof to his commanding officer , Admiral Maresby , and from that we have gathered the above particulars . Mr . Maidment ' s body was found in the cavern , and Captain Gardiner ' s lying beside the boat which he had apparently , lef t , and , being too weak to climb into it again had died by the side of if . The bodies were buried with all due formality by the Captain and crew of the Dido . We may remark that the stores expected by the wretched victims of mistaken zeal were left at the
Falkland Islands , tipon tlie chance of a ship calling there and risking her insurance , by taking them on to the missionaries . No pains , whatever , were taken by the Society , at home , to succour the brave fellows whom they had persuaded to sail towards all hut certain destruction .

He must have been disturbed in Ms operations , for he left bis boots behind him , and threw the greater part of the flag-staff into the field , only retaining the eagle .

" The poor woman was in a very weak state when , she _ made this statement , and it was feared she could not survive . Her husband has been brought up from day to day at the public office , and now stands remanded until Monday . As to the cause of the affair , we may mention , that on being told his wife waa not dead , he said to Sub-inspector Taylor , ^ If I had known that , I would have knocked her brains out with the butt end of the gun ; sire has been a drunkard , and a great trouble to me . The Staitdard Has These ^Useful And Unex...
The Staitdard has these ^ useful and unexpected observations on free discussion of theological opinions : — " There are many wise men who consider questions of religion as unfit for discussion in . a mixed assembly , such as the Lords and Commons . Wo confess that wo do not participate in . this opinion . We may regret the existence of religious differences in the houses of the Legislature , but wo cannot admit that on that account religious discussions ought to be excluded . They who feel their case a weak one may naturally shrink from stating it where ifc is like to bo opposed , crying ' peace , peace , where there is no peace ; but men strong in their religious convictions ought not , from any inferior consideration , decline honestly to profound and to defend them . They were not the worst oges of British history when tho legislature freely engaged in relig ious discussion . The present time scorns , indeed , to recall tho necessity for such freedom . Wo have a .
Romanisfc and a Romanising sect labouring b y all indirect means to undermine and to subvert tho faith handed down to us by our Protestant ancestors . We cannot counteract their insidious efforts by like indirect practices , for tho Protestant spirit rejects whatever is indirect . Wo must , therefore , moot them by plain downright free discussion , and what p lace so fit for such discussion as tho houses of Parliament r What if tho two houses aro mixed assemblies ? Inw only proves their bettor qualification for dealing with sucn theological questions us our adversaries will not ^ l w rest ; for in these mixed assemblies each sect has its aavocato , and tho collision of opinions—given , as ifc will do universally , to the people through tho agency of tho press —given to an extent of rungo to which no other instruction can bo given—will nofc failto elicit and diffuso tho trutn . They who foar tho truth , therefore , are tho only porsons who ought to fear theological discussions in Parliament .
