' ' THE DIRECTORS OF THE STANDARD LIFE ASSURANCE COMPANY Request attention to the report of the Company for the year 1858 . A printed , copy can be obtained on application at tne Company ^ offices in London , Edinburgh , or Dublin , or to any of the agents in England ^ Scotland ; or Iffeland . The iollowing results are stated in the report : — , The new assurances effected during 1858 exceed £ 500 , 000 , and the amount during the last 10 years exceeds £ 5 , 000 , 000 . . i „< ,-, « . ^ j . The sixth division of ; profits will take place next year , and there is an advantage in joining the Company before the « lose of the books in the present year , as the benefit of two years' entry to the profit scheme will be secured . Attention is specially directed to the fact that the Company have lately introduced into their policies certain terms and conditions which make them of increased value as the basis of marriage settlements , family provisions , and all transactions where it is essential that the contract should be , as far as possible , a complete security against all contingencies . S ., in the Chair . , From the Report / by . the Directors , -which was unanimously approved of , the following particulars are ex-I ^ Durin * k the year ending 1 st March last , 461 Policies had been issued . The sums thereby assured amounted to £ 230 , 295 , and the Annual Premiums thereon to * . 7 , ^ 75 ^ Eighty-four Members of-the Society had died during the yeartthe sums assured on their lives being £ 54 , 850 . with Bonus Additions of £ 15 , 375 , amounting together to £ , 0 , 225 . These claims were fewer in number by 27 , and less in amount by £ 21 , 000 , than the claims of the previous year . Present Value of Sums contained in , and to become duo under the Society ' s policies .- • • • 2 , o 00 , 930 Total Obligations £ 2 , 003 , 717 Third—The Gross Assets of the Society thus _ amounting to a .-, kih , j 4 j And the Total Obligations to 2 , 003 , 717 There arises a Surplus , as at 1 st March , 1800 , of £ 200 , 032 By the law regulating the division of surplus , the Directors have power to nlloeate , at each investigation , a sum not exceeding two-thirds of the surplus the" declared , m vested additions to Policies of not Ices than five years ' standing , anda sum of not loss than one-third is appointed to be reserved at eaoh investigation for contingent prospective additions , and for othor purposes oftho Society . Two-thirds of the aforesaid surplus of . £ 200 , 032 amount to £ 133 , 765 , and by an allocation o ^ £ 129 , 017 of this sum was made a vested addition at 1 st March , 1859 , at thorato of one and three-quarters per cent , per annum to all Policies then of five years' standing , providing for a Bonus of £ " 18 407 payable at the death of the parlies entitled thereto . After providing for this vested addition , there still remained £ F , 23 S botweon the sum allocated and thp twothirds of the surplus placed by the law at the discretion of the Directors for division . The Report concludes in the iollowing terms : — 11 The Directors cannot doubt but that every Polioy-holdor must bo gratllled at those results . After a most rigid sorutiny , the Funds and Assets of the Society have boon found sufllcient . not only to moot all the Liabilities , but to warrant the declaration of largo additions to Policies , at the same timo , fully maintaining tho reserve required by the Laws and Constitution of the Society . .,, „ ,.,.
